He approached Tyler and saluted. “Sir? Some of the men over here are having a problem.”

Amber smiled. The men in the regiment were coming to Tyler for help with problems and concerns. He had natural abilities as a leader and was more approachable than the general, despite the harsh front that Amber noticed Tyler tried so desperately to maintain. “Where’s your squadron leader?” Tyler asked the boy gently. The young soldier cleared his throat. “I am the squadron leader, sir.”

Amber watched Tyler walk with the soldier and wondered how it would have been to meet him under normal circumstances, in their own time. As she folded her tent and observed the other soldiers around her, she realized with dismay that she was the only one with a cot. Everyone else slept in bedrolls on the ground.

She hastily snatched up the cot and rushed to the medical tent where Dr. Davis and the medical team’s four other physicians were preparing to travel. She hadn’t encountered any open hostility or animosity from the four other men, thanks to Dr. Davis’ intervention, but she had felt their stares and their reservations as she worked alongside them.

“Td like to donate this.” She extended the cot to Dr. Davis. “I’m sure we’ll find a use for it when the time comes.” Davis seemed surprised. “Isn’t it yours? I understand the general put you in one of the larger tents usually reserved for high-ranking officers.”

Amber flushed. “I don’t need it.” Davis accepted the cot from her. “Thank you, Dr. Saxton.” She smiled at the major. “You’ve known me for several days now and have found me to be a competent colleague, I believe. It may not be altogether proper, but I really wish you would call me Amber.” “Well, in that case, you must call me James.”

Tyler made his way through throngs of soldiers on his way to the medical station. He needed to be sure Amber was doing well and was ready to move out with the rest of the regiment. You know shes fine, his thoughts mocked him as he walked. You’re looking for excuses to see her. “Well, why shouldn’t I?” he muttered aloud, eliciting stares from those he passed.

He clamped his mouth shut. Why shouldn’t I? He mentally repeat- ed the thought. She was beautiful, brilliant, and funny.

Covenan t Communications, Inc. Newsweek, March 16, 1998. uw ai his novel is a work of fiction. Dorothea Dix, Elizabeth Blackwell, Clara Barton, S. Weir Mitchell, and General Ulysses S. Grant are the only historical figures in this work. All other characters and their names are fictional and in no way reflect people, living or dead, who may bear the same or similar names.

General Stuart Tyler Montgomery is also a fictional character. He and his actions are unique to this book and are not intended to be a reflection, real or implied, of any historical figures influential during the American Civil War. The battle in Chapter Nineteen is also fictional. In reality, Union troops were attacked by Confederates at Grand Junction, Tennessee, on December 20, 1862, but the Federals tallied only fifty casualties.

The battle scene in this book was implied as a larger-scale conflict for purposes of the story line. x ad an wer so at ET RT Mk iy ae » = y 2 – H Nagi : ie i : a i > To, , Low apes myer i mee 4 . – a fa iid kia yee) sn mah ee Sh ahd ar i meet iz = piel!

OY ret m= : beatae : _ He pi 0 nei – a, ; 1 ‘7 ‘ r – eee yn aban et tees aders f ; 15, Be y rehearsal balet). i Lister s hw — Sa ) Senne ord i i? 2 evoicmcy ae 7 aie 7? & aes | F – a a Lig is ae aii | OS Datiee yr | he tension was thick in the small office.
