Amber smiled. The men in the regiment were coming to Tyler for help with problems and concerns. He had natural abilities as a leader and was more approachable than the general, despite the harsh front that Amber noticed Tyler tried so desperately to maintain. \u201cWhere’s your squadron leader?\u201d Tyler asked the boy gently. The young soldier cleared his throat. \u201cI am the squadron leader, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amber watched Tyler walk with the soldier and wondered how it would have been to meet him under normal circumstances, in their own time. As she folded her tent and observed the other soldiers around her, she realized with dismay that she was the only one with a cot. Everyone else slept in bedrolls on the ground.<\/p>\n

She hastily snatched up the cot and rushed to the medical tent where Dr. Davis and the medical team\u2019s four other physicians were preparing to travel. She hadn’t encountered any open hostility or animosity from the four other men, thanks to Dr. Davis\u2019 intervention, but she had felt their stares and their reservations as she worked alongside them.<\/p>\n

\u201cTd like to donate this.\u201d She extended the cot to Dr. Davis. \u201cI\u2019m sure we’ll find a use for it when the time comes.\u201d Davis seemed surprised. \u201cIsn’t it yours? I understand the general put you in one of the larger tents usually reserved for high-ranking officers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amber flushed. \u201cI don\u2019t need it.\u201d Davis accepted the cot from her. \u201cThank you, Dr. Saxton.\u201d She smiled at the major. \u201cYou’ve known me for several days now and have found me to be a competent colleague, I believe. It may not be altogether proper, but I really wish you would call me Amber.\u201d \u201cWell, in that case, you must call me James.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tyler made his way through throngs of soldiers on his way to the medical station. He needed to be sure Amber was doing well and was ready to move out with the rest of the regiment. You know shes fine, his thoughts mocked him as he walked. You’re looking for excuses to see her. \u201cWell, why shouldn’t I?\u201d he muttered aloud, eliciting stares from those he passed.<\/p>\n

He clamped his mouth shut. Why shouldn\u2019t I? He mentally repeat- ed the thought. She was beautiful, brilliant, and funny.<\/p>\n
