Singing and dancing together is difficult, bu\u2019 it is an important skill for any performer to master.\u201d \u201cHe looked very serious while he was dancing,\u201d said Pop. \u201cI\u2019ve never seen Marmalade look so serious before!\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s what concentration does,\u201d Mr. Penardos said with a smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cBu\u2019 you\u2019re right, Pop. Marmalade was singing and dancing a happy song with a serious face. Expression is something else that you have to get right. And you need to be able to express the emotion of the song not just through your voice and facial expression, but also your whole body.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s an awful lot to get right at the same time,\u201d said Chloe. \u201cOf course it is,\u201d Mr. Penardos agreed. \u201cAnd it\u2019s important not to overdo it, bu\u2019 people do hold their bodies in different ways when they feel different emotions.<\/p>\n

Then you can try all the different emotions you can think of.\u201d When Marmalade started to express happiness, he went into a pirouette as he so often did when he was excited. But this time he wasn\u2019t concentrating, and he fell over. Everyone laughed. \u201cYou\u2019ve forgotten about spotting during your pirouette,\u201d Mr. Penardos told Marmalade as he got up, grinning ruefully. \u201cYou of all people should be able to do that.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t forget that your head should be the last part of you to turn and the first to arrive, and keep those eyes focused on a spot at eye level or you\u2019ll fall again. Jack, can you pirouette?\u201d \u201cYes,\u201d said Jack quietly. \u201cGo ahead,\u201d Mr. Penardos said. \u201cDo a few and show Marmalade how it\u2019s done.\u201d Marmalade had to stand by and watch while Jack executed a series of perfectly balanced turns. Jack\u2019s ballet training had given him great poise. He made the pirouettes look effortless.<\/p>\n

Chloe was very impressed. \u201cThat\u2019s fantastic,\u201d she enthused when Jack had finished. \u201cAnd they look really serious somehow. When Marmalade does them, they\u2019re just a laugh.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s all about the emotion,\u201d Marmalade told her quickly. Mr. Penardos laughed. \u201cYes, it is,\u201d he agreed, \u201cand Marmalade is very good at being funny when he dances. But don\u2019t do any more careless moves,\u2018 he added to Marmalade. \u2018I\u2019ve seen you fooling around in the hallway.<\/p>\n

Marmalade scrambled for an answer. \u201cBecause . . . because he might get teased,\u201d he said. \u201cDon\u2019t be silly!\u201d Chloe laughed. \u201cHis dancing was amazing.<\/p>\n
