The difference now was the way she’d curl up on the leather couch wearing my hoodie, working quietly while I listened to tracks. People at the office weren’t stupid, neither was Kev, he definitely knew something was up, but kept his mouth shut. “This shoot is a mess, I’m gonna need to redo all of this,” she continued, typing while Kev adjusted the levels on the bridge we’d been fighting with. “Shot list, photographer coordination, wardrobe brief, plus time to convince these people that ‘approachable luxury’ is actually a thing.”

I loved watching Taryn work. She was so good at what she did. She could see exactly who people needed to become, then build the bridge to get them there. Ellison Brand & Image Consulting was something she built from nothing but talent and hustle. WadeHouse might’ve been her biggest client, but she definitely wasn’t dependent on us. That month alone her clients included a prosecutor running for Mayor, a local news anchor crew who wanted a more polished presence, and a real estate agent who needed marketing shots that said “forever homes” not “Starter houses.”

Since I knew she’d be home all day, in her zone, probably forgetting to eat, I had the first delivery scheduled for eight AM. Five dozen red roses to her house along with a veggie omelet, hash browns and coffee from the deli she frequented. My phone buzzed ten minutes later. Flowers? We said no Valentine’s Day. Are they not nice flowers? Zion. What? I like flowers. You like flowers. The typing indicator appeared and disappeared three times. They’re gorgeous.

Thank you. And for breakfast too. The second delivery arrived at eleven-thirty. Two-hundred stems of white peonies with eucalyptus. This time she called me. “What are you doing?” “Working. What are you doing?” “You know what I mean. We said no Valentine’s Day.” “Did we? I don’t remember agreeing to that.” She sighed and was quiet for a long moment.

“They’re beautiful.” “I’m glad you like them.” “Ok, but that’s it, right? No more.” “Gotta go. Meeting starting.” I hung up before she could protest. At one o’clock, I had lunch and one hundred stems of pink and purple tulips delivered. At three o’clock, a mix of four dozen merlot, blush, and purple roses.

Then finally at close to five, a mix of white roses, lilies and hydrangeas, truffle chocolates and strawberries. At 5 PM, she sent me a selfie of her with her living room looking like a florist shop. This is ridiculous. You look happy. I’m overwhelmed. You’re smiling in the photo. Maybe a little. Pick you up at seven. For what? Dinner. You’ve been working all day. Need to eat. Zion, no. You are already pushing it.

We’re not doing dinner. Not today. Why not? Dinner at a restaurant on V-Day means something. Means we’re hungry. Stop overthinking. I can’t believe you with all this.
