Alternate Worlds A Memoir From The Early Days – Brian H Schneider

was around 20. I was in a car with Chris Esko on the way to Magic: the Gathering Regionals. Neither of us were planning to go, but we made the trek anyway. Neither of us knew what we were going to play, and neither of us knew where we were going to stay. We stayed, it turned out, on the floor of some Team Deadguy friends.
It didn’t matter what we played, because we had slept on the floor of some Team Deadguy friends. It was cold. On the 4.5 hour journey, we had a good chat going, with me often asking questions like, “I don’t understand why x does y?” which sustained Chris for a few hours, but at some point he tired and asked: “What DO you understand?” Well. Huh.
That was a tough one. Conversation stalled there, and we rested for a bit and that ended up being just fine. I was 20, so I didn’t understand much. I was stumped. When I was 5 years old, I was at synagogue, with my father, for one of the holiday events one goes to synagogue for. I remember thinking, very clearly – that the people I witnessed in the room didn’t believe any of the stuff they were saying.
They were tolerating it, for reasons I couldn’t understand, and I could never un-feel this. I continued going to synagogue because I had to, because my grandmother would be upset if I didn’t, because I was asked to tolerate it, and etc. There were two teachers I remember very clearly: Mrs. Raden, a Holocaust survivor who had 8 children, then had an absurd amount of grandchildren – because her children wanted to do the best they could to replace the people lost in the Holocaust.
And Mr. Klein, who berated us for not knowing how to read Hebrew fluently, and spoke very boldly about how he would fight to the death for Israel and that when the time came we should follow suit. Mrs. Raden spoke to me, and was my favorite Hebrew school teacher by far. She connected with me, I connected with her. Fill the world with love and growth and abundance – express empathy despite the pain. I could get behind that.
