Alpha Uncles Exiled Mate – Jasmine Fox

“It’s your private life. My opinions about that don’t really matter,” she says, and absentmindedly brushes her fingers across her lips. Catching herself, she withdraws her fingers like she’s been burnt, and glares at me. “You had a lot of options, and you chose to kiss me? In public?” I smirk at the sight of her flushed cheeks. “You had a lot of options too: hit me, scratch my eyes out. And yet, you chose to kiss me back.” Her cheeks glow a faint red, and she shakes her head.
“I—I… that’s not—” she stutters. And the corner of my mouth lifts with a small smile before I can stop it; not because I enjoy seeing her flustered, but because the truth floats between us undeniably. She feels it. And I do too. I straighten, forcing control back into my voice. “We’ll finish this later.” Because if I stay, I’ll drag her to me and demand the real answer. I turn and track Selah’s scent down the hall. My wolf is already pacing and irritated. She must have walked away when I kissed Nyra.
I find her lingering too close to the boardroom. “Come here,” I growl, not waiting for her consent. My hand closes around her arm, and I pull her inside, slamming the door behind us. Selah yanks her arm away, scowling. “What the hell is your problem? We’re not really engaged, and so what, huh? Did you have to humiliate me like that, in the presence of all those people?” My smile is ice. “You embarrassed yourself, Selah. All that nonsense you displayed out there is on you, and no one else.
I should be asking if you’ve lost your goddamn mind! What were you thinking, coming here.” “You’re going to stand there and defend her, again? Even after what she did to your brother? We don’t have to be engaged before I get the right to call her a homewrecker,” Selah spits. “Everyone knows what she is. Nyra Vale is a murderer. An abomination from the Blood Shade. You should not even be here in this filthy place. You should want nothing to do with her.” My wolf paces so hard my vision flashes white.
A low growl slips out, but it is enough to silence her. “Are you finished?” My voice sounds like velvet stretched over steel. She pales, but her mouth snaps shut only because she’s smart enough to see the danger simmering under my skin.
“You will always be alone, Nyra.” I draw in a sharp breath and feel the harsh burn in my lungs as I run. But I don’t stop. I can’t. The voice slithers through the trees, cold and filled with venom. “No one will ever love you. You don’t belong anywhere.” The woods blur around me with thick branches shaped like claws, the mist curling against my naked skin like ghostly fingers.
Above me, the moon bleeds red, glaring through the thick fog like doom’s eye. “Help!” I scream so loud, my throat feels like it’ll rip apart. “Please…someone help me!” But my voice just reverberates in the darkness, and I don’t realize I’m crying until I taste salty liquid in my mouth.
I stumble over roots but catch myself just before I fall. My heart is pounding so hard it hurts. Sweat slicks my back, my hair plastered to my face, and the adrenaline that once kept me moving is fading fast, leaving my legs heavy and weak. Then it starts again, the taunting voice. That awful, whispering voice that sounds too much like my own. I press my palms against my ears and shake my head. “No! Stop it,” I choke, stumbling forward again.
“Just stop!” But it goes on…until there’s a sudden silence. Even the wind and trees go still. My pulse hammers as I turn slowly, and the hairs on my neck rise before I feel the foreboding presence. A massive black wolf steps out from the mist, and its eyes burn like coals. I back away, trembling, my throat tight, and the voice in my head whispers one last time, “You’ll die alone too.” The wolf lunges, and all I see is a flash of long silver claws before hot, searing pain spreads across my neck.
I gasp— And bolt upright in bed, with my heart racing and my sheets soaked with sweat. “I can’t get it out of my head,” I say into the voice message. Jason’s offline, but talking to the empty chat still helps. “It felt so real…as if something was really out to get me.” I hit send and toss my phone on the console. My fingers tremble against the wheel before making a right swerve to avoid an oncoming car. It’s my twenty-third birthday today, and the day is almost over…
yet Jason hasn’t checked in on me or replied to my messages. He’s never not been the first to wish me a happy birthday until this year. I try to swallow the dread curling in my stomach, but I can’t shake off the feeling that something’s wrong. I have to find him.
I need to make sure he’s okay. Cool air washes over me, and my boots crunch against dry leaves as I step out of the car. This is the cabin Jason comes to when he needs some time alone.
