Glucose, carbohydrates, iron, protein, acids and sugars, fat and vitamins, but also hands and earth, and dedication, and fertilizers, sun and water, insects and birds, and we someones ourselves who go out and talk to the avocado tree in some solitary afternoon where we wish only to speak to the trees, but the cilantro leaves hear us, and the little lizard eating the cilantro, and also the old lady in despair centuries ago – maybe an enslaved woman in the Caribbean with connections in the ports where the European ships started the global market of capitalism, circling the world to exchange bags of rice in Asia, or beans in Mexico or India, for other merchandises, and the old women decides to trade the avocados and the plantains that were abundant on the island, in that time when the Caribbean sofrito had just come into being, that first experiment of combinations, garlic, onions, peppers, oregano, cilantro, parsley, and sometimes fruits.

Our diverse organs, our bodies, not so much consciousness, experiment together in their molecular entanglement with everything that exists in that dish, and this becomes the metronome that marks the time of the species. Weeping or Rain enjoys the talents of her sisters, harmonizing and giving rhythm to our mass connection. Now (we someones know) it’s her turn. She must add a new form to our affective harmony and to the beating of our embodied centuries.

What could Weeping or Rain possibly add to Cloud’s harmony and Poppy’s rhythm? She starts by transmitting again the conviction of the Trilcineas that intercepted her sister Poppy a few hours ago. But when she enters Poppy’s mind something terrible disrupts her, and through her, all of we in the mass connection. Poppy is intercepted by an intense emotion coming from the Coder who, in that very instant of finishing the farofa that Alice prepared for him, realizes he is about to die because his friend has poisoned him.

The Coder, perhaps aware that he belongs to Poppy’s following and that she can feel what he feels, experiences for the first time the intense emotion of sleep.

‘Something is happening in Puerto Rico. In a world that the powerful insist on subjugating, critical and unbridled imagination rises up. This is not just another narrative of the end of the world, but rather its continuation by other means. With a wild, delirious intelligence, Animal Spiral is a visionary work of fiction that seeks to construct, on the basis of carnal and complete connection, a beyond that flourishes in collectivity and the death of the individual.’

– Cristina Rivera Garza ‘In times of multiplying dystopias, this novel gives the gift of utopia. From the Caribbean to the world, growing with the passion of the “great squash” that his teacher Macedonio Fernández imagined, Luis Othoniel Rosa has created a new mythology: one last refuge for a collective consciousness that will not surrender. Owning “the right to madness” at the beginning of the book, here the genre of the novel goes mad. The result: a master work capable of redeeming a broken world.

Poetics of the swarm, poetics of friendship, a collectivized poetics: this novel solidifies a wondrous oeuvre that seems to be written as an embrace.’ – Carlos Fonseca ‘Healing, regenerative, and indispensable, Rosa’s Animal Spiral is a brilliant delirium of a novel, an ecstatic catalyst for radical reimaginings, a decolonizing masterpiece of trembling and touch. Probing our most fundamental sociopolitical assumptions to shatter the shackles of petrocolonialism and misogyny, Animal Spiral births a lush new world.’

– Joy Castro ‘Good fiction, transcendent fiction, the kind that burns, seems to have only two ways to escape irrelevance: to weave a narrative about nothingness or to embark on the adventure of telling everything. Animal Spiral raises its monumental, spiralling architecture on the shoulders of the latter path. From the ruins of our capitalist, colonial world, he gives birth to something new, hopeful and cruel, complex, contradictory, courageous.’ – Sebastián Martínez Daniell 1kitap1.com/en ANIMAL SPIRAL 1kitap1.com/en First published by Charco Press 2026 Charco Press Ltd., Office 59, 44-46 Morningside Road, Edinburgh EH10 4BF Copyright © Luis Othoniel Rosa 2026 First published in English as Animal Spiral and simultaneously in Spanish as El gato en el remolino English translation copyright © Katie Marya 2026 The rights of Luis Othoniel Rosa to be identified as the author of this work and of Katie Marya to be identified as the translator of this work have been asserted by them in accordance with the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.
