The fact that it was Hammer of all people who’d finally done the deed was even more surprising. And though this might have looked like progress, he had just sent away any number of potential witnesses. I watched the reactions of the previously joyful attendees as the news sank in. A group of children, who’d been made up to look like tigers and lions by Sylvia Chapman’s impressive face painting, all spontaneously burst into tears.

In fact, kids across the village began to shout and cry and their mothers and fathers didn’t look too much cheerier. “Ahhhhhh!” Ramesh joined in. “You already knew there was a murderer here. Why are you getting worked up now?” He cast me an evil look. “I’m highly attuned to the public mood, Izzy. You could do with a little empathy yourself.”

It was high time that I ignored him, so that’s exactly what I did. I left him alone on the bench, with one of the prize-winning scones he’d been keeping in the pocket of his orange jumpsuit. I didn’t bother pointing out that it was Saturday or that my birthday was still a few months off. I walked back to the centre of the green, where people were really panicking and P.C. Burton clearly didn’t know what to do. “What happened with Nate?” I asked, and his head flicked about as though he were doing a lazy dance.

“We were over with Anthea. I kept him sitting down away from the body, and after a while, he went crazy. His mates from forensics turned up, and he just shoved me out of the way and drove over here. I might have been able to stop him, but he pushed me right over. I don’t know what’s got into him.”

“So, Hammer isn’t normally like this?” I felt I had to ask. “He isn’t always such a marauding brute?” Personally, I’d have described him as the love child of King Kong and a London bus, but your version is a little snappier. I could see that Burton was torn between his loyalty to his colleague and his desire to keep the peace. “Well… I suppose he isn’t the gentlest of souls.

But he means well.” Hammer was still on the stage, enjoying the chaos he’d stirred up. His eyes roamed the village, but whatever or whoever he was looking for, he didn’t appear to find it. He leaned in to the microphone and, in a voice as deep as the Pacific Ocean, declared, “Have no fear, ladies and gentlemen.

This is the seventh Izzy Palmer Mystery novel and it’s safe to say that a lot of stuff has already happened in the story. That doesn’t mean that new readers aren’t welcome to marvel at the cast of wonderful weirdos who have only got stranger over the course of the last two years, but I have written this book for fans of the series to enjoy the culmination of several storylines.

There are no spoilers of previous mysteries in this book but, if you haven’t read any of the earlier novels, get ready for something a bit different. 1kitap1.com/en Chapter One My mother’s dressing room was every bit as lavish as I had expected. She had not one but two rows of lightbulbs around her mirror and a gold star on the door with her name printed on it. To say that her own star had risen would be an understatement. She’d gone from being Rosemarie Palmer, retired primary school teacher, to Bu- Bu La Mer, viral sensation.

Her hit one-woman show had received rave reviews. She’d become a darling of the chat show circuit and, before I knew it, we’d arrived at the opening night of “Bu-Bu: La Musical”. Her new production was an all-glitz, all-glamour, entirely fictitious retelling of her life, with a cast of thirty hopeful starlets, singing and sashaying their little hearts out around my mother in the centre spotlight.

“Is it strange that I’m nervous? I mean, it’s just been so long coming.
