He could have smiled at her expression if the raw emotion hadn’t stolen the words from him yet again. “York handled it.” Aven ran her hand along the wound before she grabbed for a container of water and splashed it onto the area. Roran’s heart clenched, his body seizing. “You’ll live. I’ll make sure of it,” she added. “A skilled liar you’re not,” he forced past his teeth. She smoothed her crimson-slicked hands over his face before she pressed to his chest and forced him to remain still.

“The healers are on the way. I know we have one in camp, and we were lucky enough to find more along our path. What were you thinking, Roran? Why would you take off that way?” Aven pressed. He wanted to tell her the truth. He had practice with the hard conversations, didn’t he?

The casual tone of her voice betrayed her emotions. He felt them as keenly as the splitting pain in his calf. His throat bobbed, and he nearly choked on the words. “I’m sorry.” “Just hold on for me. Okay? Hold on. Because I need you.” Then oblivion took him, and he remembered nothing else.

The darkness swept in, gathering him close, and sinking iron teeth into him to keep him contained there. He came awake to the sound of low voices speaking, two women bickering back and forth, before he sank back down. He had no idea how much time passed before he slowly roused himself out of unconsciousness. The first twitch of his fingers heralded the stiffness of his limbs. The rest of him felt like absolute and utter shit. His mouth held the faintest taste of bitterness and acidity, as though someone held his head to a plate of brierberries and forced him to eat every single one.

Roran never had a taste for brierberries, and the only delicacy he wanted was a puff pastry with sweet cream and fresh chocolate sauce. Or perhaps Aven’s tender breast and hard nipple between his teeth. The tent was now silent outside a constant drone of wind.

Yet the canvas had been battened down and the flaps secured. Blankets and furs piled high around him, and by the time he found the strength to push them off, he was sweating. His shirt clung to his chest. Roran ran a hand over his racing heart. Then, steeling himself, he bent his knee and drew his leg up for a closer examination.

Nothing but unblemished skin greeted him, not even the twisting and pink puckered skin of a scar.

Back in Mourningvale’s cells with nothing but rats for company, and the king rat himself in the cell beside her.

It was far from ideal. She blew out a breath, but there wasn’t enough light to see if it formed a cloud of vapor in front of her face. These conditions were meant to break a lesser criminal. Only Aven wasn’t a criminal. She was a queen. With a kingdom to look after and her odds of escape growing smaller by the second.

Maybe she hadn’t been destined to get out of this. She’d reached this point by miracles alone. “Be sure to sigh that way when Cillian comes back,” Roran called out loud enough for her to hear. “It may sway him. You sound morose and dejected.” “Do you blame me?” Aven wrapped her arms around her knees and drew them against her chest. Every time she closed her eyes, flashes of the battle returned.

She saw the Fae King, imperious and black-hearted, throwing his mettle against hers. And the impossible odds worked in her favor—she somehow managed to defeat him.
