His magic wasn’t the only way for him to stoke the flames. She’d seen it. “I could stand to see those tricks a few more times,” she admitted. With a groan, Roran leaned back, caressing his lips against hers and drawing her into him. Aven shifted, her blankets falling away, and allowed him to haul her halfway onto his lap. “Later,” he growled in promise. “Right now, it’s time for me to go. My bribes will only hold for so long before the wrong people find us together.”

“You’re going to have to get me a list of names. It might be time for me to clean house,” she joked against his skin. “Bribes only last so long before people get greedy and want more.” The way she wanted more. Aven wanted to keep him in her bed all day long, feeling the glide of him against her, exploring what they could make together and the way their bodies fit.

Pressure built up in the back of her skull as she watched Roran dress. She knew how it felt now to have those long, muscled legs twined with hers. She’d run her fingers along every scar on him she could see, and he’d done the same for her, never minding that she was flawed. In more ways than what showed on the surface. With him, she was free to be herself. Flawed and messed up and failing. It didn’t matter to him. Roran kissed her goodbye before slipping out behind the tapestry on her wall—the same path she’d taken to meet him—and hopefully none of the guards were the wiser.

A brief flash of fear took hold, worry over whether someone had found her exit and blocked it off, trapping her lover inside. She sank against the mattress that still smelled of their combined scents and forced herself to relax. With his magic, it should not be a problem. While he couldn’t transport himself the way Cillian could, Roran was stealthy and stubborn. He always found a way to get what he wanted. Including her. Aven clenched the sheets to her chest and hid her smile among them.

Last night had been amazing, a true culmination of everything she’d wanted and hadn’t been able to admit. But how in the world was she going to be able to keep this a secret from everyone? That was exactly what it had to be—a secret. If her people or, heaven forbid, Cillian found out what she’d done with Roran, then everything would be over.

Before they had a chance to gain any ground. Aven gnawed the inside of her cheek, her attention fastened to the fire crackling merrily in the hearth. Dawn would be here soon, and with only several short hours of sleep, she braced for another long day. She’d keep this secret the best she could, expecting the worst and hoping for the best.

As queen, her best had to be better than anyone else’s.

Roran wasn’t sure which of these events shocked him more, but the ice around his heart fractured with each rise and fall of her chest, each precious breath a miracle he’d torn from death’s grasp.

His essence now flowed through her veins, binding them together in ways even marriage vows couldn’t touch. He’d given her everything—his magic, his life force, his soul. And somehow, impossibly, it had been enough. She took another shuddering gasp and reached for him, fingers trembling. Cillian roared again, his massive power generating a cyclone of air and violence around him.

The air itself seemed to bow to his will, thick with the stench of corrupted magic. A god among immortals— and Roran had nothing left to fight him with. The dregs of his power fluttered uselessly inside him, spent in the desperate act of bringing her back. He’d do it again. A thousand times over.
