A Wallflower To Clash With The Dark Duke – Aria Norton

When had Mary and Nicholas become so familiar? “Charlotte, darling,” Mary said. “Aren’t you supposed to be preparing for your ride with the duke?” It was a dismissal. Charlotte felt irritation spike through her, but Lord Blackthorne was already taking his leave. After he departed, Charlotte turned to her sister. “You seem quite familiar with Lord Blackthorne.”
“He’s been very kind to me at various functions.” Mary’s smile was sharp. “Though I must say, it’s rather amusing that you suddenly have two men interested when you’ve had none for three seasons.” Charlotte also wondered the same thing. *** The barouche ride through Hyde Park should have been pleasant. Instead, Charlotte felt balanced on a knife’s edge. Alexander sat across from her, looking impeccable.
Beside her, Sarah and Edmund whispered and laughed, oblivious to everything else. “You’re very quiet,” Alexander observed. “Your cousin called on me this morning.” Something flickered across Alexander’s face. “Did he?” “He seemed quite familiar with my sister. They exchanged looks that suggested they’ve conversed before.” “Mary and Nicholas? That’s… unexpected.” The barouche hit a rut. The jolt threw Charlotte against Alexander’s side, his arm coming up automatically to steady her.
For a moment, they were pressed together, and Charlotte felt her breath catch. “I apologize,” she managed, pulling away. “No harm done,” Alexander said, his voice rough. “Edmund,” Alexander said suddenly. “Look behind us. The man on the bay horse. He’s been following us.” Edmund turned, immediately serious. “Are you certain?” “Certain enough.” Alexander was already rising. “Ride on,” he told the coachman, then jumped from the moving carriage. The rider saw him coming and wheeled his horse around, spurring it into a gallop.
“Edmund, go after him!” Sarah urged. Edmund jumped from the carriage as well, racing after Alexander. Charlotte and Sarah rode in tense silence until the men returned ten minutes later, frustrated and winded. “Lost him in the alleys near Park Lane,” Alexander said, climbing back in disheveled. “He knew the area too well.”
“This was a message,” Alexander continued. “Someone wanted us to know we’re being watched.” “I have news about our investigation,” Alexander said. “I have the name of the messenger who delivered the warning letter. We should visit the messenger service near Fleet Street.” Sarah and Edmund excused themselves for a private walk, leaving Charlotte and Alexander to investigate alone. *** The messenger office was cramped and busy.

However, one sharp-tongued encounter at a London ball places her directly in the path of the enigmatic Duke of Ravenswood, igniting instant friction. Yet, when Charlotte saves his life from a deadly attack, she discovers that even the coldest heart can be stirred… Haunted by his father’s suspicious death, Alexander Blackthorne, Duke of Ravenswood, returns to society determined to expose a killer. He trusts no one—until the brave wallflower who saved his life refuses to leave his thoughts.
A fake courtship is meant to be a shield, so how could it be that it quickly becomes the one danger he did not anticipate? As threats close in and betrayal lurks where loyalty should lie, pretense gives way to a romance neither can deny.
