BETRAYAL – Arthur Cole

I spent some weeks in Hendon on a C.I.D. basics course and remember how I had to slow my speech down to be understood by my English colleagues but I never dreamt of losing my accent. Even my dad, who had been born in in Ireland kept his accent after twenty years of working as a detective in South Wales. Accents add interest, colour, identity. “Suppose you’re clearing your desk?” I said but didn’t wait for a reply.
“The team have fixed a drink up for you tonight in the Old Castle, you up for it?” “That’s a bit out of the blue,” Myers said. “Yes, that would be very nice and appreciated. I don’t want anything over the top mind, you know… low key…” “I’ll sort it, boss. I’m looking forward to it,” I lied. “Oh, by the way, Terry, just to give you the heads up. You’ll be my replacement. I’ve spoken to the A.C.C., the wheels are in motion, but that’s between the two of us, okay?”
I pretended I was shocked. “Aye, see you tonight.” Chambers had already given me the heads up about replacing Myers, I was going to break it to the team as soon as Myers was loaded into the taxi and sent on his way. I gave Ed a bell. If I had to attend a party with Myers I wanted someone to help me try and have a bit of fun and Ed was always the man for that.
I explained my predicament to my old pal and he seemed well up for it. “Can I bring a plus one, Terry?” Ed asked. “Do what you like, Ed,” I said. “I take it that it will be Gail?” I added like a mischievous schoolboy. Ed laughed.

Williams 1kitap1.com/en AUTHORS’ NOTE The statistics for crime recorded in England and Wales for the year up to July 2017 show 1.8 million ‘recorded’ crimes committed. When this is compared to the number of serving officers of 123,000 you get an idea of the workload some officers have to deal with. Detective Chief Inspector Terry McGuire is one such officer.
As the leader of a team of detectives dealing with serious crimes, McGuire has to juggle priorities and steer the team to investigate all the serious crimes reported to his department. There is rarely a time when the department is not dealing with several cases at one time.
As writers of the Terry McGuire series of crime thrillers, we were determined to reflect this workload. Unlike most other crime writers, who often concentrate on a single case, we try to show real police work and everything that entails.
