It’s a basic spare bedroom with a bed and dresser. Nothing exciting. I’m using the third and fourth bedrooms as storage, so they have boxes and a couple of bookcases. The bathroom door is open, so she peeks in there. “You’re tidy,” she says. That makes me chuckle. Shrugging, I grab her hand on impulse and lead her to the staircase up to the former lantern room. “Ohhhhh…you just hide it all up here,” she says, looking at my desk and drafting table, the bookcases overflowing with sketchbooks, textbooks, and piles of paper.

Her brow furrows adorably as she glances around. “Where’s the lantern?” “This was never an official lighthouse. No Fresnel lens. My ancestors would use oil lamps and light codes to communicate and guide the ships when necessary. The point was to be unnoticed. It still is.” “It’s a beautiful house. I did the lighthouse challenge recently, and this would be cool to have as a part of it. It would be a wonderful park.” A chill races down my spine. “No, absolutely not. No one knows this is here unless they see it from the water.

They know to stay away. I treasure my privacy.” She lays her hand on my arm and gives a light squeeze. “Don’t worry, Cam— Is it okay if I call you that?” I nod. She gives a quick grin. “I’m not going to tell anyone.” “Violet, I’m serious. I don’t want you to post about your painting or tell anyone about the place. I don’t want people here.” My voice sounds harsh even to my own ears, but it’s vital she understands this.

She pulls her hand away and crosses her arms over her chest. I feel the loss of her warmth. “I get it. This is a special place, having people here would ruin it. Remember, I’m a Bigfoot shifter—not getting noticed is in my DNA.” How could she not be the center of attention no matter what form she’s in? I know she attracts my attention like a magnet to the refrigerator door.

The room darkens when the afternoon sun goes behind a cloud, and Violet starts. She looks out the front-facing window toward the water, and then out the rear window to the woods. “It’s getting late.” She turns toward the stairs. “I should head out.” I follow her down the stairs, unsure what the rush is.

“It’s not that late. You’re welcome to stay. I could make dinner.” She shakes her head as she continues to the ground floor. “Thanks, but I gotta get home.” There’s tension rolling off her, and I don’t know why. Then it hits me. The woods. Princess joins us and stands next to me, nosing my hand and inviting a pet, which I gladly oblige. “Will you come back?” I ask, hoping the desperation I’m feeling isn’t evident in my voice.

“Oh, am I one of the special few allowed here?”

Being an art teacher is not what I dreamed of when I was sitting in my university art classes. I’m supposed to be traveling the West Coast and painting vistas that inspire me and light a fire in my soul. Instead, I’m in southern New Jersey, teaching at a school for shifter kids because my brothers helped me get a job. Yeah, I’m fortunate to have a job, and I like living near my older brothers and their families…but it’s not what I expected my life to be.

At least I have a commission now, and it’s hopefully the first of many. Teagan Penhall, owner of the local shifter professional hockey team my brother Ollie plays for, hired me to paint a watercolor of a lighthouse on her family’s land as a birthday gift for her uncle. It’s not a lighthouse that was sanctioned by the Coast Guard—it’s something her family built to help them with some possibly illicit activities way back in the day.

I can’t wait to check it out.
