Holmes asked Xavier. “Me,” Zoe responded. “Uh-huh. But I know most of the professionals in this area and I don’t know him.” Xavier held Holmes’s gaze. “I’m not from this area.” They stared at each other. “I don’t suppose you’d show me your credentials?” “I don’t suppose I would.” Zoe’s grip on the steering wheel tightened. Xavier was surprised when she remained silent. Finally, Holmes inclined his head. “You trust this man, Ms. Linden?” Xavier waited. “Yes.” He began to breathe again. “Okay. This information stays here in this car.

Our people do a lot of insurance work, so after Mr. Trent hired us, Mark went over the list of reported crimes dating back to before the first attempt on your life. Given Mr. Drake’s past history, we were looking for a theft in his style, but big enough to have required a partner.

One or two situations looked possible, but none required a partner. And none were significant enough to have provoked an attempted murder on you, Ms. Linden.” Xavier set his jaw. “People have killed for pocket change.” “But generally not professionals.” Zoe frowned. Her gaze remained on the crowded street in front of her and she didn’t respond.

“Ms. Linden’s condo and Drake’s apartment were turned inside out a few days after his murder. That leads everyone to conclude that he pulled some sort of heist and that there was a partner, or someone who knew he had something of value.” Xavier could have added Sandy’s home to that list, but he was the only one who knew about that since she had refused to tell the police anything.

Her reticence made sense if the police had been questioning her about the attempts on Zoe. That also made her anger with Zoe more reasonable. Not only had Wayne been dating Zoe while still married to Sandy, but Sandy probably saw Zoe as the reason Wayne was murdered. Maybe she was.

“Positive.” Xavier had to get her away before trouble really did come knocking, or before she started asking more pointed questions. She snatched the veil from her head, grabbed her purse and started down the hall to the front door. “The door’s still locked.” A trace of fear returned to her voice. “How did you get in here?”

He inclined his head toward the sliding glass doors. “Balcony.” “We’re three floors up!” “I know.” He reached past her and opened the door. “We’ll take the stairs.” “But—” She bit back something that no doubt would have singed his ears and stepped into the quiet hallway.

The fire door opened a second before they reached it. Two men started to step into the hall and stopped dead to stare at him. He shoved Zoe behind him and yelled, “Run!” 1kitap1.com/en DANI SINCLAIR BODYGUARD TO THE BRIDE TORONTO • NEW YORK • LONDON AMSTERDAM • PARIS • SYDNEY • HAMBURG STOCKHOLM • ATHENS • TOKYO • MILAN • MADRID PRAGUE • WARSAW • BUDAPEST • AUCKLAND 1kitap1.com/en ABOUT THE AUTHOR An avid reader, Dani Sinclair didn’t discover romance novels until her mother lent her one when she’d come for a visit.
