When you have achieved it, imagine you are playing a mini movie in your head – what would it show? Consider: What would you be thinking when you achieve this? What would you be doing when you achieve this? How would you feel when you achieve this? What would you see yourself doing in that moment? What would it pave the way for in the future? Listen to it Doubt can sound like truth. ‘I can’t do this.’ ‘They don’t think I’m good enough.’

‘I’ll fail.’ But these are stories – not facts. Instead, consider: What is the challenge that doubt is asking of me? In this way, doubt becomes less of an enemy to silence and more of a trusted advisor whose questions stretch us. I had a client who had been given some tough feedback on her influencing style, and rather than challenging it she made it her goal to make influencing her superpower. After two months the Regional VP asked her line manager what had he done to her, as she seemed like a different person.

His reply: ‘She listened to the feedback.’ The reframe had almost immediate impact. Try the reframing formula: Instead of [assumption], I choose to see [new perspective]. For example, instead of thinking, ‘I can’t do this new integration programme, I choose to see it as a chance to build my networking and influencing skills’. Or ask yourself: What is this doubt trying to protect me from? What if the opposite were true? What if this challenge helps me to become more of who I want to be?

Assumptions are light dimmers. They wrap around our beliefs and keep us in the dark. Curiosity is how we switch the light back on. Respond with care Whilst we are making the case for the brilliance in doubt, we need to acknowledge that it can be emotionally draining and challenging. An element of self-care is required. Consider: How can I show compassion to myself in this situation?

When I first worked with Jenny over 15 years ago, I was at a crossroads – uncertain, second-guessing, and tempted to play safe. Her ability to help me face my doubts head-on gave me the clarity and courage to make one of the most important decisions of my career: the leap from being an employee to co-founding my own company in China.

That decision transformed my trajectory, and it was only possible because Jenny helped me see that doubt could be a signal, not a stop sign. In Brilliant Doubt, she distils the essence of that coaching into a powerful framework every leader can use. This book is both deeply practical and deeply human – a guide to turning doubt into the engine of wiser leadership.

Elisa Harca, Co-Founder and CEO, Red Ant Asia (www.redantasia.com) At a time when certainty is overvalued, Brilliant Doubt offers a bold and refreshing perspective. Jenny Williams reveals doubt not as a weakness, but as a hidden source of insight and strength. Through her exploration of self- doubt, situational doubt, and systemic doubt, she brings new understanding to how doubt shows up – and how it can serve us. With clarity, compassion, and practical wisdom, she shows how leaders can transform uncertainty into wiser choices, stronger relationships, and more authentic leadership.

This is an essential companion for anyone who has ever quietly wondered, ‘Am I enough?’ Jo Hicks, Chief People Officer, NHS Jenny was the first coach I ever brought into my leadership world, and she remains a trusted partner many years on. She brings energy, insight, and real curiosity to every conversation. Brilliant Doubt distils what I have seen repeatedly in practice: when leaders learn to work with doubt, they unlock clearer thinking, stronger relationships and more confident action.

Rachael Sansom, CEO, UK & Europe, Havas Red What stands out in Brilliant Doubt is the depth that comes from years of coaching those at the sharp edge of leadership. Jenny turns what many would see as a taboo into a force for good; this is a refreshing perspective on how understanding doubt can actually strengthen judgement, confidence, and connection.
