It’s horrible.’ ‘I can imagine-but I was thinking, why don’t you use it to your advantage?’ ‘How do I do that?’ I wondered. ‘You focus on Jess and her pain.

You said that you thought she had been hurt-maybe you could feel that rather than your usual way of ‘connecting’ with her?’ she suggested. I looked over at her. ‘You know something? That’s a really good idea.’ She smiled a little. ‘I’m going to try it and see. Well, I will when the painkillers kick in for you, Dan and once you’ve had something to eat, Jack.

Honestly, you two, you’re driving me mad!’ I exclaimed, indicating that she should pull into a petrol station. ‘Anyone want anything?’ she asked, climbing out of the driver’s seat. ‘Yeah-as many red bulls as you can carry,’ I muttered. ‘Sandwiches and drinks please, Hemmings,’ Captain Withers asked more sensibly. ‘We all need to keep our energy up.’ I sat back against the seat as she went inside the shop to buy us food.

As I waited, I felt myself drooping, and as I did I began to drift. ‘We have to move her T. I can’t stay in one place for too long,’ Jamie muttered, worried about being caught and put back in a cage again. ‘Where are we gonna go?’ he asked, ‘and moving her is dangerous. Just kill the fucker and then we can get out of here. They’re starting to rot upstairs, you know? We should of got rid of them sooner…’ ‘You said you would take care of it, T!’

Jamie exclaimed. ‘I’m not interested in cutting up some gay boys, you fucker. I do women only. You deal with it-I killed them like you wanted-you can deal with their rotting corpses.’ Jamie looked over at me and shifted uneasily from foot to foot. ‘I’m not leaving you alone here with her, T.

She’s mine, you know?’ T laughed, throwing his head back in a maniacal fashion. ‘Fuck off, you dick! I don’t want your dyke sister to fuck. I fuck real women. Twat,’ he muttered, shaking his head in disgust. ‘You’re wrong about her. She does like it. I used to watch as my dad fucked her.

I left Jess at the station and headed out with Captain Withers and two officers. We drove out to the house slowly, as it was snowing again and the weather difficult to drive in. The car was quiet on the way over and only the three men’s internal dialogues went through my mind as we made our way to Jess’ house. When we arrived, I felt my stomach tensing in discomfort. I gazed out of the window at the house, feeling a strange sense of foreboding overcoming me.

Once again, flashes ran through my mind of Barney-Jamie’s childhood teddy bear and I had no idea why. ‘Barnes; Hamilton-can you go and check the perimeter of the property please?’ Captain Withers asked. The two men left to check how safe it was to go back inside the home and we waited quietly and patiently in the car.

When they returned, they assured us that there were no signs of anyone around. ‘Shall we go in?’ Captain Wither asked, moving his crutches. ‘I…yeah,’ I said slowly. ‘Alex?’ ‘I don’t know what I’m feeling, Dan, but it’s not pleasant.’ ‘Do you want to wait a minute-get your bearings?’ ‘No,’ I told him, ‘let’s go and get this over with. I just want to find out why we’re here and then get back to Jess.’ ‘Okay. Come on then,’ he said, moving out awkwardly.

We got out of the car and my stomach churned violently. I paused for a moment, standing there in the snow, wondering if I was going to be sick. ‘Alex?’ ‘Just give me a second,’ I said, breathing slow and calmly to try and quell the sickness I felt in my stomach. ‘Sick means something bad if I remember correctly, right?’ Captain Withers asked.

‘It always has in the past, yes,’ I told him, gearing myself up to face whatever it was. I took a deep breath and tramped across the snow and up to the front door. I reached for my key and unlocked it slowly. The two officers who were with us then stepped forward to go inside and checked that it was clear.

Captain Withers and I stood on the doorstep for five minutes waiting for them to return. When they did, they uttered ‘clear’ which made me feel like weeping in relief. ‘Are you going in then, Alex?’ Captain Withers asked. ‘Yeah,’ I said, taking another steadying breath. I walked up to the door and pushed it open, feeling nervous and I didn’t know why. I then stepped inside.
