Everything shut off, turning its insides as dark as the pitch-black night outside. Dax opened the door. A familiar scent of summer rushed him accompanied by a wave of cool air. He paused for several seconds, looking at the ground below him. “Just jump. Josh is the best at what he does. You won’t be here long. Swallow your pride and jump,” Dax thought to himself.

He fought every instinctual urge and leaped from his ship. He hit the ground with a thud, his boots kicking up dust. Moving away from his landing spot, Kane, with the samples, Sandrina, Dalia and finally, Mark followed, closing the door right before dropping, staff in hand. Cicada songs caressed the early night air while Dax looked around. Fireflies filled the woods and flew over the lake, their tails reflecting off the still water.

Nearly half a mile away, visible from their landing site, stood a large log cabin with external lights on. “What time is it?” Mark asked. “It’s Missouri in the summer and it’s pitch black. Earliest it can be is ten, maybe a little earlier,” Dax replied. “But I’m not seeing any lights on, which means Josh is in bed.

When we get there, let me do the talking. He can be a little trigger happy.” Dax led them into the trees and started to make their way toward the cabin. He looked back to see Dalia and Sandrina interacting with and playing with the lightning bugs.

“What are these?” Dalia asked. “They’re called lightning bugs,” Dax replied. As soon as he said bugs, Dalia smashed one, smearing its glowing juice across her forearm. “You have Underbeasts here?” she asked, readying herself for battle. “Not Underbeasts, bugs. There’s a difference,” Dax countered. “How?

I’ve heard you refer to them as bugs,” Sandrina chimed in.
