A very diff erent take on the bride featured in this animat- ed comedy, pictured below, and the franchise it spawned, about a hotel for horror legends run by Count Dracula.
It stars a monster called Frankenstein, along his wife Eunice, who is voiced by American actress Fran Drescher. In the movie series, the bossy diva character is obsessed with her hair and has detachable body parts. T e horror TV series on Sky Atlantic sees Billie Piper playing Brónagh Croft, an Irish immigrant living in London.
She becomes a sex worker, who is dying of tuberculosis when she’s killed by Dr Victor Frankenstein. He reanimates her body as Lily Frankenstein, a partner for the Creature. Victor ends up taking her as his own lover, but she eventually turns the tables, leading an army against mankind, vowing: “Never again will I kneel to any man.”
T e new punk-style fi lm, directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, is set in the era of gangsters and prohibition in 1930s Chicago. It sees Hamnet star Jessie Buckley take on the role of the monster’s partner, a murdered woman called Ida. Christian Bale plays the monster, called Frank, who teams up with a Dr Euphronious, played by Annette Benning, to reanimate her. Lovers Frank and Ida end up going on the run, Bonnie and Clyde style. Jessie says of her “bride”: “In other iterations, she’s born to be a wife, but without any autonomy, with no voice, with not even an option to say ‘No’ – she just screams…”
