She wasn’t much, but she would do. A tiny shard of feeble resistance awoke in her then. She wasn’t good enough for Max, and she wasn’t enough for Kieron. They were both, the pair of them, mad for Annie. ‘Look – cards on the table – I’m not posing nude for you or for anyone else, Kieron,’ she burst out.

He was stunned by it. There was no other word for it. Stunned. He stood there for a full minute, his eyes staring into hers. There was a questioning smile hovering around his mouth, as if he couldn’t quite believe what he had just heard, as if she must surely be joking. Rebellion, from little Goody- Two-Shoes Ruthie? That just couldn’t be! ‘Oh come on . . .’ he said, teasing now, coaxing. ‘No,’ she said firmly. ‘Get to bed, Kieron. I’m tired. I’ve had enough.’

He drew back. Ruthie was refusing to go along with his plan. This was a turning point for her. At last, she was making her own feelings plain. She started to lay back down and was nearly there when suddenly he grabbed her neck with one large hand and stopped her. He had her by the throat. She couldn’t breathe. His eyes had lost their teasing light and now there was clear thwarted rage in them. ‘Would you mind telling me, Ruthie,’ he said, very low in that soft seductive Southern Irish lilt of his, the tones of which had once seemed so appealing and which now did nothing for her.

‘Just tell me, would you.’ His voice dropped lower. ‘What – exactly – is the feckin’ point of you?’ ‘Kieron . . .’ she gasped out. Couldn’t draw breath. Could feel panic setting in. ‘What, Ruthie?’ His voice was almost silky now, loverlike. ‘Come on, what? You won’t wear your hair the way I like it, you won’t wear the clothes I love to see you wearing, you keep shutting my damned dog in the kitchen and you know he hates that .

. .’ She wouldn’t be Annie. That was what he was saying. And he was right. Ruthie might be soft, she might be stupid, but she could be obstinate too. She would not pretend to be her sister. ‘Kieron, stop—’ ‘Stop what?’ He pouted now, as if surprised. ‘Oh – am I hurting you?’

Dubbed ‘Queen of the Underworld’, Jessie Keane is of Romany gypsy stock. She was born in the back of her gran’s barrel top wagon and fled to London as a teenager, finding there a lifelong fascination with the criminal underworld and the teeming life of the city. Twice divorced and living in a freezing council flat, she decided to pursue her childhood aim of becoming a writer. She sold her wedding dress to buy a typewriter and penned her first book, Dirty Game.

This was followed by further acclaimed crime novels, all Sunday Times bestsellers. Jessie lives in Hampshire with her partner.
