Willa asked as she eyed the gemstone closely. “It’s a Ruby Life Gem,” I said and went to inspect its stats. Ruby Life Gem: Saves the holder after they receive a grievous injury. “Looks pretty useful,” I said, and then I held it out to her. “You look like you want to hold it.” Willa quickly scooped up the gem from my hand and held it up to the light. “Wow,” the fairy uttered. “I think this is a savior item.” “What’s that?”

I asked with a raised eyebrow. “They’re a classification of items that helps get you out of a bad situation,” she explained. “I’m not familiar with the gem ones, unfortunately, but I know a little about them. When you’re at a high-enough level, people start to offer you rare items out of the blue. A lot of them are scams, so if you get that high a level, you should be aware.

Savior items are one of the more useful things that those kinds of merchants sell. Many just use the ones they find in dungeons. Some can act as a portal to get you out of a dungeon without having to beat the boss. Some are powered-up antidotes that can cure any poison or venom.

Some boost your strength or stamina.” I let out an amused exhale at the last one. “That one just sounds like an energy drink.” “They’re really important items to have,” Willa said. “This one is life, so I’d assume that by ‘saving’ it means that it would heal an injury or something like that.” “Huh,” I murmured.

“It definitely sounds important.” Willa handed the Ruby Life Gem back to me. “The downside to savior items,” she said, “is that they can only be used once. You should keep that one safe. You never know when you might need it.” “Thanks for your advice,” I said with a smile. “You’re very helpful.” “I’m not a great fighter, but I’ve traveled with people who are,” she admitted. “So I’ve picked up a few things.”

The old man walked up to our table and gave us our food from the tray. The stew was still steaming and had more meat in it than I’d expected. The salad consisted primarily of greens, nuts, and a generous helping of berries. It was topped with a kind of salad dressing I couldn’t identify, but it had a light, fresh scent.

It looked delicious, and I didn’t doubt Lyra would like her meal. “So, how’d you decide to become a cartographer?” I asked. Willa gave me a look that I couldn’t quite decipher. The low light made her look even prettier than usual.

OceanofPDF.com Chapter 1 The sound of swords crashing against swords filled the air of the academy courtyard. Kate, Lyra, and I watched our two knight instructors, Darya and Keith, have a sparring match with great interest. It was a good learning experience, well, at least for me.

I wasn’t too sure how much Kate and Lyra could understand about what was going on with the fast-paced nature of the fight. Neither combatant was holding back, and it was a sight to behold. Though Keith was Lvl 70, his age slowed him, and he wasn’t using any of the special skills he earned through his experience, just his raw skill with a blade. Darya, by comparison, had youth and vigor on her side despite only being Lvl 19. There was a gleam in her eyes, a kind of battle-joy that came from being truly enthralled in a tough fight, that I couldn’t deny was a little bit hot.

The little demonstration came at the end of a long day of learning. Despite the soreness that lingered, the endorphins that rushed through me were enough to balance it out. I had primarily focused on my swordsmanship, though I still spent time with Devon, the mage instructor, to hone my newfound ability to summon indigo buntings.

I still wasn’t quite sure how he managed to get the dual title of Knight Mage, but he was a very good instructor. Devon primarily worked with Lyra, but for some reason, she seemed rather skittish about actually showing off her abilities. There was an energy about her I couldn’t quite place when we talked about her studies, but I assumed it was just the normal jitters about learning a new skill.
