It would only be a matter of time before the surviving criminals returned to help their superiors. Jason wouldn’t let that happen. This murderer would never get out of this town. Suicide cocked his head. “You look sick. Still thinking about how I cooked your Mommy?” “Jason!” Matthew shouted. But he was too late.

Jason launched across the docks, a hidden flame inside egging him on. His sudden speed took him by surprise, and he stumbled in his first few steps. He leaped over Burner’s steaming body and the ground cracked under his landing weight. The dock wood split as if it had been eaten through. Jason made up for his unsure footing by leaping again.

He jumped much too high and bolted down towards Suicide in an arc. Despite his balance Jason brought his fists down like an ax handle at the source of his ire. Suicide simply sidestepped, and Jason’s full weight landed on the dock, shaking the entire structure. The enemy backhanded the boy and flashes of gutted bodies and broken bones flooded the Jason’s mind.

Familiar faces were shot, stabbed, suffocated, and burned alive. In the midst of them he watched Suicide looking over his mother’s corpse. The dock caved in. “This is how it ends, Jason,” Suicide said. The teenager roared a primal scream. In his rage, Jason mindlessly pounded both fists down again and again on the crumbling wood. The entire length of the wooden platform collapsed. All three of the figures dropped through the scattered planks and slapped down into the river.

Jason kicked against the water, pulling him deep under, but his mind refused to allow him concentration. Visions sliced at his thoughts, causing him to gag, and water rushed inside his lungs. The last thing Jason remembered before going under was the figure of Suicide slipping away into the dark waters, leaving him to sink. The boy tried to kick after him, but his limbs refused to move. Dreams of the dead and mutilated attacked Jason, and the realization he would soon join them filled his sinking thoughts with terror.

The darkness obliged his fears and consumed him whole. OceanofPDF.com MATTHEW DIDN’T think twice. When the deck went under, and all three bodies splashed into the river, he swam after Jason. The cold water instantaneously cleared his headache. He couldn’t feel anything at all aside from the burst of adrenaline as he pushed downward towards the flailing form of Jason.

The kid kicked about like he was being strangled even though nothing touched him. Had he been hit by a stray shot? Matthew reached for him and found the boy pushing back against his hold. However, Jason wouldn’t be budged. Matthew wrapped his arms around the boy’s waist, but he couldn’t move him. Somehow it felt as if Jason had gained several hundred pounds out of nowhere. Bubble streams of lost air leaked out of the teenager’s gaping maw.

OceanofPDF.com Dedicated to Phyllis Pascas Goodwyn OceanofPDF.com PROLOGUE SUICIDE ALWAYS KEPT his tone casual when he spoke with the twelve Higher Ones. Some of the lesser men wore suits or dresses to look the part of being professional or proper, worthy of the purifying fires, but he would not look up to anyone and instead kept his head shaved and leather jacket close at hand.

He wasn’t like them. The Master was on his side—he didn’t have to play to anyone. And today, these puppets declared Suicide the new prophet. He stood alone in a semi-circle of stuffed shirts who sat in high chairs to look down at the lesser dregs they presided over. Despite his towering height, they didn’t feel even the slightest bit off-kilter around him.

Perhaps they still believed they had the Master’s blessing. Why else would they call him here after two catastrophic failures and still have the gall to act superior? Serenity City wasn’t looking so hot these days, and the mess at Williams’ Tech didn’t help. The last thing the Hades Society needed was heroes on their tail, and yet that is what happened.

Too many mistakes allowed this to happen. Forget formalities; Suicide could handle all this on his own. He shuffled his scarred, meaty knuckles in his pockets. “First it was the Queen, and now it’s Bloodeater. You’ve lost us two invaluable followers with your incompetence. Our targets are two moron brothers with nowhere to run. How have you not found them?

The Hades Society has been around since the Primes first showed up on this planet—we’ve taken out tougher targets in record time. You’ve devalued the cause. If I was Nieto I’d be furious.”
