“There doesn’t seem to be a pattern,” she said, handing the journal to Dominic. He quickly scanned the passage, looking for anything that stuck out to him. “It’s not a clue,” he decided. “It’s a journal entry.” “What makes you so sure?” Rome asked, snatching the diary. “Doc used to write his thoughts down. He encouraged me to do it all the time, not that I listened.” “Maybe,” Allie said, taking the book from Romeo. “But maybe there is a clue hidden here too,” she said pointing at a sentence halfway down the page.

“The Dealer, whoever that is, might know something.” “The Dealer isn’t a lot to go off,” Romeo said as he stuck his hand through the window, becoming more interested in Ralph than the journal entry. “What about Celine?” Allie asked. “She had the key; she might know more than she’s letting on.” Dominic shook his head.

Celine seemed genuine when she told him she didn’t know what Doc had been planning, nor what the significance of the key was. Besides, Doc was careful, he would have compartmentalised his knowledge in case someone betrayed him or was captured. “The Dealer is a dude, remember?” Romeo, whose body was now hanging out the window as he and Ralph played tug of war with Ralph’s loose leash.

“That’s helpful, you’ve narrowed it down to about half the Dome,” Allie replied. Romeo sighed, climbing back into the house. “If anyone knows anything, it’s him,” Romeo said pointing his thumb at Dominic. “After all, that whole journal entry was a love letter to Dom.” “You know I don’t know anything.” Romeo shrugged, “So you keep saying.” Dominic glared at Romeo, who seemed amused at himself. Allie rolled her eyes. “Will you two focus? We actually have work to do.”

She looked towards Dominic. “Are you sure that Doc never hinted at anything?” Dominic shook his head. He sat down, holding the journal entry open in front of him. It was sad to think that Doc didn’t trust him enough to bring him in on what he was doing. Dominic shrugged. “I didn’t even know Doc was an Explorer.” Allie sensing his mood sat beside him, placing his hand in hers. Using her thumb she traced circles around his palm. “I guess it explains how he knew about Hightown.”

“This is truly quite a beautiful moment,” Romeo interjected. “But I don’t see how that helps us with the key.” Allie dropped Dominic’s hand, and his cheeks went bright red.

That wasn’t an unusual phenomenon for Dominic. After months of lower temperatures, he’d grown used to it. Warm, tropical climates weren’t expected when all that was left of humanity was sealed off in a Dome. Those conditions ceased to exist over a hundred years ago. Bright, sunny days and glittering starry nights were a thing of the past, rarely ever seen by the naked eye, only remembered by stories passed down from one generation to the next.

The sky outside the Dome was covered in a thick layer of residual nuclear fog. For Dominic, that was the only benefit of the Dome – it protected them from the toxic air of the outside world. The Dome itself was a despondent dump that mirrored the morbid nature of the land beyond the spherical walls. It was overpopulated, supplies were thin, and natural lighting was almost non-existent. Nonetheless, the last few months somehow seemed colder.

It was as if their artificial heating had been dialled down. It was the Resource Division’s job to ensure this wouldn’t happen. They had to provide food and heat, among other things for the Dome to survive, but lately, they seemed to fall short. Supplies were dwindling and poverty was at an all-time high. He used to despise the Resource Division for their inability to provide, but things were different now that he was one of them. He sat by his pile of logs, splitter in hand, gaze locked on the transparent walls.
