That day, that awful Mother’s Day, was the first time I actually looked at myself, really and truly looked at myself, and I did not like what I saw one little bit. I saw a selfish, cowardly little prick who cared more about using drugs than a girl dying in front of him. It was the first time I realised that if I didn’t change my life I would end up the same way, another statistic, another life needlessly cut short.

A few months before, I had split up with yet another girlfriend. I found myself aimlessly wandering the streets and pubs in Camden looking for her. I needed her to fix something for me, some crisis I’d probably created and couldn’t manage, avoiding dealing with my own shit, which I had become quite adept at. Or I needed her to validate me in some way or another.

I remember the feelings of utter desperation and loneliness. I was totally lost. I never found her that day, my search was futile, and to be fair she was probably at university getting on with her life. If my daughter chooses a man like I was back then, I think I’ll send her to get her head checked. Or Antarctica. Either one of those will be a plausible option. Who did find me, however, was exactly who I needed to find me.

That very day I was making my way back to God knows where, or to see who knows, probably around to my oldest pal who lived and still lives in Kentish Town, one of the only ones who truly knew me, cared about me and, rather importantly, fed me. My phone rang. It was one of the lads I grew up with who’d just driven past me. He asked me to meet him further up the street.
