OceanofPDF.com First thing Monday and the suspense, it’s killing us. Is she going to show? Has she learned? And Coach— does she know yet, what we did? We hope secretly, naively that we might get away with it. Coach won’t find out and Genevieve will take the hint and quit and everything can go back to normal like it was before we ever heard Coach say that girl’s name.

But Maris wears her marks like trophies no makeup to cover her split lip or the scratches down her cheek. We look at her in awe and shake off our fear of being found out. Wish that we had the same decorations, wish we had gotten a hit in, that we hadn’t let ourselves be held back. The looks come first. Sitting in class, and we feel it, the heat of eyes on the back of our necks.

Then: whispers. As we walk through the halls and into the cafeteria, wait in line for cold macaroni and wilted salad. We don’t normally attract so much attention. Not even in uniform, not unless it’s harassment, comments from the football team we cheer for about the color of our underwear what they’d like to do to us, but today, people see us. They see us. Builds all day, like the hum of a broken bulb, buzzing and buzzing and buzzing until it is too loud to ignore and then quiet knocks on the classroom doors.

Each of us summoned, one by one, to the gym. OceanofPDF.com Maris is the last there, she sees. Everybody else is already scattered across the bleachers. Wrong place for a meeting— a punishment? Maris presumes that’s what’s coming, knew it was coming. The principal is there, her brown face flushed angry, the principal’s assistant, tugging the tie on her wrap dress like she is afraid of them, intimidated.

Coach stands a little away from them, arms folded and a look in her eyes that says if she could kill them all right now she’d gladly do it. It’s not my fault. I did it for the good of the team, for the good of us. Don’t you want us to be the best? Don’t you see what we all are? Don’t you see she is not our family?
