Digital Healthcare And Artificial Intelligence – Clare Rainey

HeartFlow® FFR-CT is an FDA-approved tool that uses AI to create a non-invasive, colour-coded, 3D model of coronary arteries and simulate FFR [18]. HeartFlow® FFR-CT enables cardiologists to assess lesion significance and defer or plan PCI without invasive pressure wires. AI also improves image reconstruction and reduces radiation exposure, addressing the two common limitations of CT imaging. Another FDA-cleared platform, Cleerly Coronary™, represents the leading edge of AI-enhanced cardiac CT interpretation. Cleerly, uses machine learning algorithms to quantify total plaque volume, lumen diameter, and lesion location on coronary artery disease.
It can also monitor atherosclerotic plaque progression and vessel narrowing over time, critical for primary prevention and the assessment of therapeutic efficacy. AI assists in automated vessel delineation, atherosclerotic plaque characterisation and stent sizing. Tools like HeartFlow FFR-CT use AI to simulate blood flow and identify ischaemia-producing lesions from standard CTA data. AI improves calcium scoring, plaque analysis, and coronary artery segmentation. Aidoc and Zebra Medical Vision offer FDA-cleared tools that identify incidental findings and CAD markers in CT scans.
For coronary calcium scoring, tools like Philips’ IntelliSpace Portal and Siemens Healthineers AI-Rad Companion automatically compute Agatston scores, stratify risk, and integrate with picture archiving and communication system (PACS) for seamless clinical review. 8.3.4 Cardiac MRI: Automated Image Analysis and Tissue Characterisation Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) is the gold standard for myocardial tissue characterisation. AI applications in CMRI now allow for automatic segmentation of cardiac chambers, wall motion analysis, and quantification of parameters like ejection fraction, myocardial strain, and late gadolinium enhancement.
Deep learning models trained on large datasets can detect subtle myocardial fibrosis or oedema patterns associated with cardiomyopathies or myocarditis, aiding early diagnosis. AI also assists in image acquisition by optimising scanner settings in real time, reducing scan time and motion artifacts.
Digital Healthcare and Artificial Intelligence Digital technologies are essential to future-proof our health service. With an ageing population and the landscape of the post-pandemic world making increasing demands on an already-stretched human workforce, maximising the potential of a digital future is necessary. This book introduces the concepts and underpinning technology behind recent developments to give a snapshot of the state of the art in the field of digital health and provides information for clinicians at all levels of experience.
The reader will gain insight into digital health in general, with clinical, technical and industrial insights providing context to the theory.
