“Your anger is loud,” she said. “Loudness feeds it. If you want to help your son, you will learn quiet strength.” The father’s jaw tightened, but he lowered his gaze. A man did not enjoy being corrected in his own hut. Yet fear had softened him enough to swallow pride. ⊰✦⊱ The nights that followed grew heavier. The false dreams did not come every night.

They came with patience, the way drought came: not always in the same form, not always loudly, but steadily enough to reshape a land. Sometimes the dream wore his mother’s gentle face again, offering warmth and belonging. Sometimes it wore his father’s stern face, offering power and authority, promising that if Dzimbale stepped through the mirror he would become strong enough that no one ever shouted at him again.

Sometimes it wore the elder’s face, speaking proverbs that sounded almost correct, almost old, yet lacked the true root. Each time Dzimbale fought, the seed-line on his wrist darkened slightly, curling farther, as if the mind-flayer watered it with every attempt. The healer noticed. She tightened powder-lines. She added new herbs. She taught Dzimbale new anchors: not only the cord, but small human truths. “Remember your mother’s tired hands,” she told him. “A false dream makes her too perfect.” “Remember your father’s silence,” she told him.

“A false dream makes him too wise.” “Remember that the unseen imitates beauty better than it imitates ordinary life,” she told him, and her words pressed into his mind like carved stone. “Ordinary life is messy. Real love is flawed. Flaw is the fingerprint of truth.” So Dzimbale watched his waking world with new attention. He watched his mother’s hands when she stirred porridge. He watched how her shoulders slumped when she thought no one looked.

He watched how she pressed her lips together before speaking, as if swallowing exhaustion. Those flaws became his medicine. He held them in his mind like sacred objects, because they were real. He watched his father too, and this watching changed him in a way that surprised his own heart. He saw the man’s hard face and understood that hardness often covered fear. He noticed the father’s eyes lingering on him at times, not with anger, but with uncertainty, as though the man did not know how to love a child chosen by invisible wars.

Dzimbale remembered the mirror’s image of warrior parents in lionlight, and he began to understand something painful and tender at once: the souls that birthed him in other ages returned as echoes in this age too, wearing different lives, carrying different burdens. The man who shouted in kitchens still carried a shadow of lion- blood, though buried deep beneath human weakness.

That understanding did not excuse cruelty.
