His answering look bordered on apologetic. “I left home the day I turned eighteen. I limped through the last half of senior year on caffeine and adrenaline, and I wasn’t wasting rent money on a tux.” “But it was prom.” “Mom would’ve killed me if I skipped graduation.

That was the next week, and Saturdays were my best nights for tips. I couldn’t skip two in a row.” His eyes flicked to the rear-view again, then over at her. “It wasn’t that bad.” “You sure? Because that sounds pretty depressing.” He flashed her a grin. “I bet I had more fun on prom night than you did. Ten bucks says you had mediocre sex with a rich kid in a cheap hotel room —and he finished first.” “His name was Cory, and the hotel was really nice.”

“Makes sense, I guess—being that he was a rich kid and all.” Devon smirked. “Do you think us poor guys fuck better because we’re willing to work for it, or is it Mother Nature’s way of keeping us in the gene pool?” She whacked his shoulder. “He was really nice!” He laughed. “That’s the second time you’ve said really nice.” “They brought in a chocolate fountain with cheesecake bites and fruit and…”

Hope trailed off as Devon chewed his lower lip to keep from cackling. “I’m… ah… glad to hear that the room service… made up for Cory finishing first during the mediocre sex,” he managed between chuckles. Hope wanted some witty response, but he’d hit the nail squarely on the head with a battering ram. The highlight of her prom experience remained the perfectly cooked fillet and the chocolate fountain they’d put on Cory’s father’s card.

They’d been sleeping together for three months at the time, but Hope was another two away from her first partner-induced orgasm— that one came from a college guy, three years older than her. Cory was long gone by then. You don’t know you’re clueless at that age. Hope suspected that even the delectable Devon Cleary hadn’t gone into his first intimate experiences as some sort of sex deity. “Well, what did you do on prom night?”

she muttered. His smile was slow and wicked in the glow of oncoming headlights. “I made bank in tips with my sob story about missing an important adolescent milestone, clocked out at midnight and went to Edge. I mean, it wasn’t called Edge back then, but—” “Is that legal? A high schooler in a…” Devon shrugged. “Legal enough. I’d been eighteen for six months, but I didn’t show them a student ID at the door.”

“So, you went to a BDSM club on prom night and had great sex.” Her chocolate fountain prom story withered with every word out of his mouth. “Oh no. I watched.” His expression turned thoughtful. “I went back the next night. I did a scene, but it wasn’t…” Wetting his lips, he tugged at his collar.

“I didn’t hook up with anyone.”

HOPE OceanofPDF.com H HOPE ope stared across the sea of milling bodies to where Devon, Nix, and Lucas juggled glass and alcohol for the masses. Two times in as many hours, Devon had abandoned their table for the business side of the bar. They’re in the weeds, he’d say, foot bouncing on the bottom rung of Hope’s chair until she vibrated with his restraint.

Shit. Lucas dropped a glass… Shit. That guy is mouthing off to Nix… Shit… A veritable play by play until the vibrating stopped because Devon had bolted for the bar. Considering he hadn’t taken a New Year’s Eve off since opening the place, Hope wasn’t holding his need to help against him. Idleness wasn’t his nature when something needed to be done. And here—in his house? Despite his tendencies, Devon didn’t possess that level of control.

Hope sipped her wine and waited, seconds piling on top of the fifteen minutes he’d already been occupied. At least she had an excellent view. The rolled shirtsleeves, ink covered forearms, and self-assured competence… Delectable. Devon grabbed a bottle with the same confidence he grabbed her, and that got Hope tingly in all the best places, two glasses of Cab Sauv or no. Her thoughts circled things she’d always fantasized while watching him work.

Her legs around his hips. Yanking his shirttails free of his jeans.
