Embracing Light Binary Souls Duology 2 – Cat Sirota

He shakes his head, mouthing, “I’m sorry.” Estrid’s heart sinks, and that kernel of doubt expands, leaving her shaky. What if he doesn’t forgive me? What if I underestimated us or his feelings for me? You can’t think of this now. Keep going. With her teeth gritted, and swallowing down her doubt, Estrid takes the last few steps up the stage; the priest calls for quiet as he waves the windows and drapes high up on the walls shut.
The room dims and darkens, with only slits of light peeking through small openings to the great hall. The priest starts to chant in a throaty language that Estrid doesn’t understand. The Fae below her hum together as the cauldron in Dagda’s hands brightens with a warm, yellow glow. The ethereal light pushes the darkness back, making Estrid squint at its brightness.
The priest ceases his hymn, turning to face Estrid and beckoning her to step closer. “Only those with pure intentions will be recognized by Dagda. Estrid of the Winter and Shadow Courts, are your intentions pure and truthful?” Estrid bows her head with a nod. The priest waves his hand up toward the black cauldron; it glows brighter, its warm light becoming a stunning gold.
As if it bubbles and boils, the brightness dances as something starts to emerge. The priest’s arm strains as he calls upon Dagda in the strange language. Slowly, a crystal goblet emerges from the cauldron, shimmering as its sharp edges catch the light and reflect across the room like stars in the night sky. The cup moves down toward Estrid, guided by the priest’s magic.
It hovers in front of her. A clear liquid ripples and moves in its body. “Drink,” the priest says, his eyes overtaken by the same gold in the cauldron. “You’ll be asked to drink from a sacred goblet. It is harmless if your intentions are pure.” Edur’s words of preparation play back in her mind as she takes the glass. The smooth surface is warm to the touch as her lips meet the edge before she tips the liquid into her mouth.
Her eyes widen as the fluid fizzes at the contact. It has a strange flavor—not sweet, not sour, but something in between. Estrid gulps it down. It tingles down her throat, and she scrunches her nose at the odd sensation. The cauldron starts to bubble some more, its glow becoming so bright that all the Fae in the room avert their eyes from it. Like a meteor has struck, there’s a flash of light before the room is plunged into darkness again.
Slowly, the priest’s magic opens the windows, and natural light filters back in. The goblet has disappeared from Estrid’s hands, leaving an imprint of a symbol on her right hand. Three connected lines curl inward, like a fern, in the same direction.
