They belong to the same family as Oaks and Beeches. The bark is grey-purple and smooth, and develops vertical fissures with age. The twigs are purple-brown and buds are plum, red-brown and oval in shape. They can develop vast girths that can reach up to 2m in diameter. This tree is not precisely native to the British Isles, for it did not arrive here by the time Great Britain separated from the Continent, as the tree species were slowly marching north in the wake of the retreating glaciers.

It is widely believed that Sweet Chestnut was brought here by the Romans. Their nuts are a little like conkers (which come from an entirely different tree, the Horse Chestnut) but those of the Sweet Chestnut come in clusters, and are of course edible. These trees have a kindly vibe, with a sense of gentle sensuality and nurture. Healing Culpeper says that if you dry the kernels of the nuts and grind them into powder, then mix them with a little honey, you will have a remedy for coughs and spitting blood.

Try roasting chestnuts on a long fork, if you have an open fire – they are very tasty. Sweet chestnuts are rich in Vitamin C (the only nut, that is). They also contain Vitamin B, magnesium, potassium and iron. They contain more starch than most nuts. Myth Myths about this tree are scarce. The ancient Greeks dedicated this tree to Zeus and children were said to be found in the hollow of an old chestnut, before the myth of the stork.

This tree is associated with fertility. Magic Chestnuts can be used in love spells, and simply fed to a lover to increase love and desire, if you’re looking for a quickie aphrodisiac. Visit The amazing Tortworth Chestnut can be found near St Leonard’s Church, Tortworth, Gloucestershire GL12 8HF. It is massive, spreading and venerable.
