And the common good, he teaches, is the basis of all healthy laws. Martin Luther King Jr., in his iconic Letter from Birmingham Jail, cites Aquinas for his insistence that bad laws ought not to be obeyed. Conscience reigns. The work of the prophet is “not only to apprehend something, but also to speak or to do something.”

To stand up and be counted therefore. “Playfulness, or Fun, Is a Virtue” According to Aquinas, prophets must undergo practices that refresh one’s mind, spirit, and body on a regular basis. Aquinas celebrates the virtue of eutrapelia, which he defines as “playfulness” and calls for busy people to make room for it: “Words or deeds wherein nothing further is sought than the soul’s delight are called playful or humorous.

Hence, it is necessary at times to make use of them, in order to give rest, so to speak, to the soul.” We need to rest the soul just as we must rest the body, and “the soul’s rest is pleasure.” Meister Eckhart (1260–1327) has had a profound influence on Fox’s life and work. The medieval German mystic is the most cited author in Fox’s writings and is a paragon of the creation-centered tradition.

While studying Eckhart’s writings, Fox discovered the four paths and many of the themes of creation spirituality. Matthew has written three books on Meister Eckhart including Passion for Creation: The Earth-Honoring Spirituality of Meister Eckhart (originally called Breakthrough: Meister Eckhart’s Creation Spirituality in New Translation. He presents thirty-seven sermons translated from the critical German editions with a commentary after each. Madonna Kolbenschlag, author of Kissing Sleeping Beauty Goodbye, called that book “the most important book on mysticism in 500 years.”

His second book was Meditations with Meister Eckhart, which is a simple “right brain” book that gathers many of Eckhart’s most meaningful teachings, one per page. And most recently, Meister Eckhart: A Mystic-Warrior for Our Times pairs Eckhart with a different thinker in each chapter, whether Rabbi Abraham Heschel, Carl Jung, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Black Elk, Rumi, the Beguines, or Thich Nhat Hanh, and thereby draws out the deep and ecumenical wisdom of Eckhart.

(CB) Via Positiva: “All Creatures Are Words of God” (Sermon 1) Eckhart preaches: God is a word which speaks itself. Wherever God is, there he speaks this Word; wherever he is not, there he does not speak. God is spoken and unspoken. The Father is a speaking action, and the Son is an active speech. What is in me goes out from me; if I am thinking it, then my word reveals it and yet remains inside me.

It is in this way that the Father speaks the unspoken Son, and yet the Son remains in the Father. I have often said that God’s exit is his entrance.
