“What were we discussing?” he asked once they resumed the dance. “Nothing which gives either of us any pleasure,” she said, having no desire to discuss Wickham any further. Unsettled by Sir William’s mortifying presumptions, she changed the subject. “Will you return to town soon?” “Yes, although my cousin is keeping an eye on my sister, I will not be easy until I see her myself.”

Grieved by her suspicion that Wickham had harmed Miss Darcy, she knew she would do the same for her own sisters. “I hope you will find her recovered from her troubles.” “As do I,” he said as they joined hands. “May I claim the sixth set with you?”

A flutter of pleasure coursed through her at the prospect of standing up with him again. “Of course.” She knew she ought not, but except for Sir William’s interruption, this set had been nearly perfect, and she refused to deny herself the pleasure of dancing with him one more time. He would be going home soon, and she doubted she would ever see him again.

At the end of the set, he wrote his name on her dance card, then bowed and left her. Admiring the two entries written in his neat, even hand, she knew she would always treasure that memento of their last dance together. OceanofPDF.com Chapter 15 As Elizabeth watched Darcy converse with Mr Bingley, she found herself accosted by her hostess.

“So, Miss Eliza, I hear you are quite delighted with George Wickham,” Miss Bingley said with an air of civil disdain. “Lydia has been asking me a thousand questions about him, but what he quite forgot to tell you is that he is the son of old Wickham, the late Mr Darcy’s steward.”

Of course, Elizabeth had this information confirmed by Darcy but dared not mention her prior knowledge of events, knowing Miss Bingley held no cordial feelings for her. That situation could only worsen if Caroline knew Darcy had confided in her. She kept a pleasant façade, determined not to cross swords with her. Miss Bingley continued in a haughty voice. “Let me recommend to you, however, as a friend, not to give implicit confidence to all his assertions; for as to Mr Darcy using him ill, it is perfectly false.”

Fitzwilliam Darcy is forced into doing what he hates the most, talking to strangers. Before he knew what was happening, he was dancing with one of them at the Meryton assembly. Will the indignities never cease? When Elizabeth Bennet overhears Darcy’s cutting remarks at the assembly, she exacts her revenge by encouraging her chatty friends to welcome the newcomer to the neighbourhood.

If he thought his insults would go unchallenged, he would soon learn his mistake. Let it go? Not Elizabeth. Darcy and Elizabeth deny their attraction while engaging in a battle of wills. Will their rivalry and misunderstandings lead to disaster? A sweet Regency romance. (Chapter 3) OceanofPDF.com Elegant Female A Pride and Prejudice Variation Chapter 1 15 October 1811 Fitzwilliam Darcy despised dancing. Of all the activities he had been forced into since attaining his majority, assemblies and balls were the bane of his existence. The crush of strangers, the insipid maidens, the hopeful mamas, and the incessant noise drove him to distraction. And yet, where did he find himself that evening but in a ramshackle hall in the wilds of Hertfordshire surrounded by farmers, shopkeepers, and other undesirables of questionable ancestry.

Charles Bingley had leased a country estate and invited Darcy to join him for the shooting season. When advised of his friend’s plans to attend the nearby village assembly, Darcy attempted to decline, but to no avail. Bingley had made it impossible to refuse by insisting that his greatest hope was to meet his new neighbours. “I promised to bring my housemates. Besides, how shall I enjoy the evening knowing you are sitting home alone all night?”

Bingley had said with imploring eyes. Damn and blast! Such boundless enthusiasm shall be the end of me, Darcy thought.
