The warmth kissed her bare skin, delicate and lingering like the memory of the night before. The scent of cedarwood and skin—his skin—clung to the tangled bedding, seeping into her like a balm she didn’t want to wash away. Amy stirred, fingertips seeking the body that had kept her wrapped in heat and pleasure all night. But the space beside her was empty. Still warm. Cage. He’d already slipped out, no doubt to start the day, to make coffee the way he always did—quietly, thoughtfully, as if letting her sleep was his most sacred duty.

She smiled sleepily, her limbs stretching across the bed like she belonged there—because she did. Her body ached in all the best ways. Last night hadn’t been rushed or wild. It had been intimate. Reverent. The kind of lovemaking that left echoes in her bones. And today… was the beginning of something new. She rolled out of bed, slipping into a soft tee and a pair of jeans, the cotton dragging across skin still sensitive from where his hands had worshipped her.

Her feet were bare as she padded into the hallway, following the warm scent of coffee and bacon that filtered from the kitchen. She paused at the edge of the doorway, watching for just a moment. Cage stood by the counter, shirtless, the lines of his back shifting as he reached for the coffee pot. He moved with a fluid, grounded ease that made something low in her belly tighten.

He was laughing softly, pouring orange juice for Ezra, who sat perched on a stool with bedhead that defied gravity. Joel and Gabe were already at the table, halfway through their food, their plates dotted with toast crumbs and scrambled eggs. “Morning,” Amy said softly, stepping into the kitchen and brushing her hand down Ezra’s back before pressing a kiss to his messy curls.

Ezra grinned. “Hi, Mom.” Cage turned toward her, his gaze sweeping over her like a caress. “Sleep okay?” he asked, voice husky, still worn from sleep. She met his eyes, heat curling in her chest. “Yeah. Perfect.” He held her gaze a second longer than necessary before turning back to the stove. And she knew—if the boys weren’t around, he’d already have her pressed against the counter, picking up where they left off. After breakfast, chaos bloomed. A symphony of thudding feet, flying backpacks, bickering over charger cords and snack bags.

Amy stood at the front door with her arms crossed, watching the whirlwind unfold with a mix of affection and exasperation. Cage was outside, already loading the truck with practiced efficiency, like this had always been his family too. When the house finally stilled, she clapped once. “Okay. Family meeting.”

Three heads turned in unison—Ezra wide-eyed, Joel suspicious, and Gabe with that unreadable look he was perfecting as a teenager. Amy softened her voice. “We’re going somewhere new today. Somewhere important.

Heart pounding, she flailed at the snooze button on her alarm clock, nearly knocking it to the floor. A groggy curse slipped past her lips as she cracked one eye open.

The vibrant hues of dawn seeped through her blinds, a cruel contrast to her exhaustion. The digital face of the clock stared back, uncaring and silent. Six in the morning. Monday. She groaned and rolled over, dragging the covers over her head. Five more minutes—just five more minutes. The alarm’s piercing wail erupted once more, yanking her fully into consciousness. Reality slammed into her like a freight train.

The boys had to be at school. She had to be at work. And she was already running late. “Shit!” Throwing back the duvet, she stumbled out of bed, barely dodging the laundry basket she’d meant to put away last night. The small duplex was alive with chaos—footsteps thudding down the hall, drawers slamming, hurried voices overlapping. The familiar morning madness.
