what I wanted to ask was…” She clicks her teeth, flashing him an anxious grin. “Can we go somewhere where we can be alone?” Gods help him. “The people around us are not real. We are alone now,” he replies. Patting his chest, she stares at his neck like it is the most interesting thing in the world. “I-I know… but it still feels like they’re watching us.” He stares at the figures on the dance floor, their blurry faces swaying around them with no discernible features.

There is no reason to deny her request, but he suspects she has another motive for wanting to be rid of any prying eyes. “Do you not wish to dance anymore? I did not think I was that terrible,” he says, huffing a laugh. She rolls her bottom lip through her teeth and wraps her arms around his neck again, just like she did during the slow dance. “No, it’s not that… When we’re pressed together like this, it reminds me how much I enjoy the softness of your feathers.”

“You may touch them all you like,” he blurts, a little overzealous. She snickers, tucking her chin. “I’ve been wanting to ask if I could touch the span of your wings, but I’ve been too nervous. When I run my hands through your feathers, it makes me wonder what the rest of you feels like, you know?” Oh, he definitely knows. “Any human would be curious to know what an ‘angel’ feels like beneath their fingertips, so there is nothing to be nervous about,” he says.

The prospect of her hands exploring his body has his every atom shaking. “It’s just that we have a limited time together, and I’d rather spend it learning about one another instead of dancing. Especially since I’m so bad at it,” she says, her gaze lifting. “Unless you want to, because another slow dance —” “I do not care about dancing.” For some reason, she seems surprised by his statement. While she cannot read minds, he thought he was ever so clear about his desire to fulfill her every whim.

“I will take us somewhere private,” he says, suppressing the urge to pull her closer. The desire to succumb to lust will not take him, as his need for her favor is much stronger. “Thank you, Asta. I apologize if my request is a little weird,” she says with an impish grimace.

Oh, how he wishes to read her mind, but she did not react well the first time he did. In truth, if he were to process the full implications of her request, he might vaporize on the spot, just like the bottles he struck in the game. He should expect innocence, even if his restraint is bursting at the seams.

I grew up attending an orthodox Catholic church and was always fascinated by the designs and descriptions of biblical angels (which was later amplified by my love for Bayonetta).

Creating my angel was a true callback to my days sitting in the pews, imagining what angels truly looked like: multiple heads, no bodies, no limbs or extra limbs — it was a horror fan’s dream! Astamesiophelous’ design is near and dear to my heart, as it’s an ode to the ornate nature of the church I grew up in. I’m no longer a practicing Catholic but I’ll always love stained glass, gold, and copious amounts of filigree.

As a final note: this novella is very personal to me. It’s a story I’ve wanted to write for years, but could never find the proper words to tell it. I hope you enjoy Marcy and Asta’s story. -Nathalia Rui Pronunciation guide: Astamesiophelous: AH-stuh-mes-E-O-feel-us Asta: AH-stuh OceanofPDF.com Helpline Info If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic abuse, there are ways to get help.
