After cashing in one of the bonds, we began to look for a car dealer. As luck would have it, A. E. England Pontiac was directly in our line of vision. Pointing to the dealership, I grinned and said, “Watch this.” For a while we just looked over the cars in the lot, then, feeling more bold, we strolled through the showroom. The expressions on the salesmen’s faces showed that they were not impressed with us.

With our blue jeans, sandals, and casual blouses, coupled with the fact that my size and ponytail made me look fourteen, I was sure that they thought we were a couple of kids playing hookey from school. None of them hurried over to see if they could help us. After a short time spent just looking, a midnight blue 1963 Grand Prix caught my eye. “Come on, Sheri,” I said as I spotted the car. “I’ve found one I like.” When we got to it, I opened the door and looked inside.

To me it looked like the fanciest piece of machinery in the world. It had a leather interior and wood-covered accessories. Every¬ thing about it shouted class. This would be the ultimate vehicle in which to cruise. “Sheri, wake me if I’m dreaming, but this is our car!” “Yeah,” she agreed, “I can see us in this one.” Across the room, the salesmen had taken all they could. One of them broke from the pack and crossed the showroom. He walked directly up to us and said, “Excuse me, would you mind not putting your fingers all over the car?”

“Oh, excuse me,” I said as I smiled sweetly, “I didn’t mean to be doing anything wrong. By the way, how much does it cost, and what kind is it?” “It is a Pontiac Grand Prix, our top-of-the-line model, and it is very expensive.” “I want to buy it,” I grinned. Looking at me as if he thought I was a mental case, he impatiently replied, “A car like this costs a great deal of money.

I’m afraid that you couldn’t afford it.” At that point I went over to the sticker, looked at the bottom line, smiled back at the man, and said, “I’ll take it.”

to share this often unsavory story, and when the pieces of my bizarre life begin to fall into an understandable perspective, you will know why it has taken me as long as it has to grasp it for myself, much less to tell it.” —LAUREN CHAPIN “I WATCHED LAUREN GROW UP ON THE SET OF Father Knows Best.

I loved and respected her then, and I do now. Although she has gone through extremely difficult times, she has once again come out on top.” —ROBERT YOUNG “LAUREN WAS MY DELIGHTFUL TV CHILD. After that, life was not kind to her. I’m sure it took courage to write Father Does Know Best.” —JANE WYATT “LAUREN’S LIFE WAS NO FAIRY TALE, but I can think of no one who better deserves to live happily ever after.” —ELINOR DONAHUE “WITH WHAT I KNOW OF LAUREN’S EARLY LIFE, I’m not surprised she became ‘Peck’s Bad Girl’ for a time.

This should be some read.” —BILLY GRAY J Wi- :vv:r:._ – -•’ ■’•I LAUREN (HAPIN WnN ANDREW COUINS B BERKLEY BOOKS.
