He was frightened to see what kind of man his father had been as King, and what he expected of him. What he expected his son to be. Because Aric knew that he could not achieve that. He was too sickly, too frail, too easily discouraged. He was not a man like his father. And it was easier to turn away than face it. But now, he had to face it.

He needed to know what his father’s final vision for the Kingdom was, and try to implement it before it was too late. Just because he was probably dying, did not mean he should not be a good Prince. He looked around, realising that the attendants were waiting for his command. He nodded, and they pushed open the doors.

Slowly, he rolled his way inside. It was not how he had expected. He had seen those who worked in Records walking about, usually looking very serious, with keys attached to their sashes. They were pale, as if they did not get enough sun. They never left the palace, certainly. It would not be a life for him. Aric imagined what Octavia would think, seeing these dusty scholars bending over papers, and he smiled. Her enthusiasm would almost certainly come to the fore, as she dived deep into tomes on kingdom regulation and old laws.

Towards the other end of the room there were long trestle tables with wooden stands for books. He made his way towards them, waiting for someone to intercept him and offer assistance. He reached the table when a figure floated towards him, pulling their hood back to reveal an enquiring expression.

“Prince Aric. Can I help?” Her voice was low and modulated, perfectly pitched for a place of study. Aric inwardly gave thanks for her lack of reaction to the chair or his dishevelled appearance. He probably looked nothing like a Prince. “Thank you, er, Records Keeper. I need to see the last thoughts of my Father, and his wishes for the Realm.”

The Records Keeper cocked her head on one side, bird-like. “And would you like to see the records of the Queen and her plans? They are not yet of public record, of course.” Aric frowned in puzzlement.

And They Lived Happily Ever After… About the Author OceanofPDF.com Chapter One Once upon a time there was a Princess called Octavia, who lived in a kingdom called Shadowfen. It was at this time a peaceful land, both prosperous and beautiful.

The King and Queen were wise and gracious, and had a great love for each other. Octavia was the youngest of seven daughters, and was also their favourite, being the last to remain at home. She spent happy days in the royal library or studying with the Palace Centaurs, and her talent for magic was growing. She had a strong affinity for healing and she could dance with the leaves and the trees.

But one day her mother Queen Beatrice received a letter from one of her distant relatives, Queen Isolde of Ember. Her only son, Prince Aric, had come of age, and was keen to meet a suitable princess to fall in love with. The kingdom of Ember was a strong one, situated in the volcanic mountains to the East.
