“Well, according to Roger, there are unusual silica concentrations in nearby rock samples, including traces of hydrated silica gel.” “Opals?” I gasped. “Possibly.” Heath took another sip of coffee. “Suffice it to say, both the archeological and geological teams are pretty jazzed.” He set his cup down and leaned forward. “But are you sure you want to go? This trip has been so chaotic, with so many people involved. And I still feel terrible about the way you met Julie…”

His voice trailed off for a moment before he cleared his throat. “I just don’t want confounding variables and outliers to hinder what I’m hoping will be a very fruitful and significant experiment.” Heath didn’t meet my eyes as he said that last part, and for some reason, the tips of his ears had turned red.

My eyebrows drew together as I nodded, mulling over his choice of words. Experiment, as in the garnet’s parascientific properties experiment? Or had he been referencing the expedition to find Attila’s tomb? Or something else altogether? Before I had a chance to seek clarification, Heath’s cellphone rang.

“Sorry, Laney, that’s probably Li,” he said, fishing around the pocket of his cargo pants to retrieve it. “Li, hi,” he spoke into the receiver. “Yes, I’m here with her now… No, she wants to stay… Yes.” He glanced at me. “I was glad to hear that as well.” My cheeks flushed at the sentiment. “Okay, we’ll grab our things and meet you on the street side of the hotel in…”

He regarded me again. “Uh, forty-five minutes?” I nodded, glancing down at my watch; that gave me just enough time to properly kick off my experiment. “Great. See you soon, Li.” Heath stuffed his phone back in his pocket. My pulse quickened. Chewing the inside of my cheek, I turned to Topie.

“Hey, Topes?” He looked up at me, left ear twitching. “Go wash up and pack your things for the trip, okay? I have, uh… something I need to talk to Heath about. Um, in his room.” “Oh?” Heath’s right eyebrow arched. “Mmhmm,” I replied, dipping my gaze to the ground. After opening the back door of my room for Topie, then locking it behind him, I followed Heath to his room, just a few doors down. The moment he closed the door behind us, he turned to me.

“Is everything—” My lips crushed against his, cutting off his question. Heath gasped, his hands freezing midair as though he didn’t quite know where to put them. So, I made the decision for him, placing his palms firmly atop my breasts.
