FIL – HJ Stallard (1)

It may have doused the sweltering heat to something more manageable, but I had parked down the block, which meant I stood under the easement or got wet. Though I didn’t have a problem with the latter, I doubted much my client would approve. My hands in my pockets, I rocked from heel to toe, listening to the rain pelting on the different surfaces. Hard on the ground, dull thunks on the canvas above us, clinking on the metal roof of the building. They made a melody that was quite soothing to my dying soul.
I noticed Mr. Diangelo was still chatting away, so I forced a smile and nodded, acting as if I were paying attention. Outwardly, I was a fully functioning man, handling the death of my wife like anyone else would in my situation. Underneath, I was empty. I woke up every morning and forced myself to work through the pain, both physical and emotional. I did my job as successfully as always, only no one knew one eye was constantly on the clock, waiting for five so I could leave the office, go home, and get plastered.
Every day got harder than the last, not easier. I didn’t know how much longer I could go on without Rachel. I just wanted to be with her, where I belonged. Diangelo cackled and slapped the back of my shoulder, knocking me out of my thoughts. Nodding and faking a laugh, I thumbed my nose and gazed across the street. My stomach churned and my teeth ground, spotting Ruby stepping out of the café.
What the hell was she doing here? For months, I had tried to get her to sign the goddamn postnuptial contract so she couldn’t get to the Baxton money, now I would literally pay her to go away. What the hell was she still doing in Biloxi? Clearly, her marriage was over; she needed to take her ass back to Michigan.
She bristled and slowly turned to find me ogling her.
This story was inspired by the song I Found, by Amber Run. When all the odds were against them, Draven and Ruby somehow managed to see what no one could. Two broken souls that are toxic, can still love one another. Behind every bully is either a sadistic sociopath, or someone lashing out from their own pain.
Draven Baxton is both, and Ruby Campbell is just the woman to bring the two pieces together and fulfill all his needs. Sometimes, love is where it’s never supposed to be, but can heal even the most bitter wounds. I had never seen so many people in one place. Sweaty bodies writhing and swaying together to the music that vibrated straight to my bones. Red, orange, and yellow lights streamed above, flickering in tune with the beat, stirring the crowd. The song hit a crescendo and smoke poured from pipes on the ceiling, drawing a cheer from the hundreds of dancers. Tossing back another shot of whiskey, my brain was a scrambled mess of booze, pot, cocaine, and ecstasy.
Restless, I scanned my sight around, looking for something to entertain me. So far, this spring break had been pretty boring, and I was ready for some kind of action. Ibiza was supposed to be the best time of my life, but I could have just gone to Miami and gotten the same basic ass. Picking up the fresh shot set beside my elbow, I brought the glass to my mouth when I saw her dancing on one of the platforms near the DJ station.
My heart sank, my stomach flipping over. Every sound faded until all I heard was my own heavy breaths. My peripheral turned black so I could only see her. Thick, wavy blonde hair that fell just past her shoulder blades, tanned skin, heart shaped face with high cheek bones and a pointed chin. Her brows were thin with high arches, her nose narrowed and short, upturned at the end. Full, thick, pouty lips that shimmered bright red, dark eyeshadow and long, thick lashes, the mascara and liner running slightly because she was sweating from dancing.
