New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, for instance, displays his Portrait of Vsevo- lod Mikhailovich Garshin, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris has the Portrait of Grand Duke Michael, and Helsinki’s Ateneum Art Museum has many works dating from Repin’s last 30 years, when he lived in Kuokkala, a town less than 30 miles from St. Petersburg. (The Soviets held him in such high regard that the town’s name was changed to Repino after its annexation from Finland.)

The vast majority of Repin’s paintings are in Russia — now out of reach for most Western admirers — and it has been decades since a major retrospective graced a European museum. In 2001, Ilya Repin: Russia’s Secret drew crowds to the Groninger Museum in the Nether- lands, and four years later The World of Ilya Repin and His Contempo- raries appeared at the Von der Heydt-Museum in Wuppertal, Germany.

In 2023, the governments of China and Russia decided to celebrate 2025 as a year of cultural exchange, agreeing to exhibit some of their greatest artworks as a gesture of friendship.
