This is a tents-only campground with 36 sites. EBase of Yosemite Falls Trail, just west of Yosemite Valley Lodge on Northside Dr., Yosemite Village. Housekeeping Camp. Each of the 266 units here consists of three walls (usually concrete) that are covered with two layers of canvas; the open-air side can be closed off with a heavy, white-canvas curtain. Inside, typically, are bunk beds and a full-size bed (dirty mattresses included); outside is a covered patio, fire ring, picnic table, and bear box. You rent “bedpacks,” consisting of blankets, sheets, and other comforts in the main building, which also has a small grocery.

Lots of guests take advantage of the adjacent Merced River. Reservations are through Yosemite Hospitality (wwww.travelyosemite.com).ESouthside Dr., ½ mile west of Curry Village. Lower Pines. This moderate-size campground with 60 small tent/RV sites sits directly along the Merced River; it’s a short walk to the trailheads for the Mirror Lake and Mist trails. Expect lots of people. EAt east end of Yosemite Valley. Upper Pines. One of the valley’s largest campgrounds, with 238 tent and RV sites, is also the closest one to the trailheads. Expect large crowds in the summer—and little privacy.

This 151-site camp for tents and RVs is on Yosemite’s western boundary, south of Hodgdon Meadow and just 17 miles from the valley but far from its bustle. A small grove of sequoias is nearby. This campground sits among lodgepole pines at 7,200 feet, above the valley on Glacier Point Road. From here, you can easily drive to Glacier Point’s magnificent valley views. Fall evenings can be cold. The 110 sites can accommodate tents and RVs. EFrom Rte. 41 in Wawona, go north to Glacier Point Rd. and turn right; entrance to campground is 25 miles ahead on right side.
