Now it is almost a foregone conclusion that it was a mete- orite strike. The big questions are: Where did it hit? Was it just one? Did it cause volcanic activity that added to the damage? Did it superheat the air as it ripped through the atmospheric envelope of the planet and cook the dinosaurs like meat on a spit?

Did the impact cause a “nuclear winter’ ‘ and darken the planet for months or years? These questions, which are now the problems to be solved with the new paradigm, could not have been generated with the old paradigm of gradual extinction. The discovery of “warm” superconductors was made by a Swiss physicist, Alex Mueller, who is an IBM fellow at its lab- oratory in Zurich. He follows the older, other-field model of paradigm shifter just like Alvarez. Dr. Mueller was assisted by a young physicist, George Bednorz, who hadn’t established his reputation yet.

In fact, it was an error by this young man — not setting the oven hot enough — that accidentally provided the first samples of the ceramic compound. Had he been more experi- enced, he probably wouldn’t have made the error. I hope you noticed it was a ceramic material that became superconducting under much warmer conditions than any other material ever tested. Yet, anyone who knows anything about electricity knows that ceramics are used to insulate from not to conduct electricity.

Dr. Mueller, who didn’t know the supercon- ducting paradigm, had this feeling about ceramics. And his in- tuition proved to be Nobel Prize- winningly correct. This pattern of not knowing any better happens in business all the time. I was lecturing to a group of salespeople for Josten’s, a Minnesota company that sells recognition products to schools and businesses. They produce class rings, school yearbooks, rec- ognition awards, among other things. Afterward, a man of His- panic background came up to chat.

He told me that he had shifted a paradigm. “I was taking over for my father who had been the salesperson for Josten’s in Puerto Rico.” He said that his father had prepared him to go out for the first time to meet the school principals who were his customers. *The schedule he gave me was to take me all week to complete,” he explained. “The first day, I was running late, so by the time I got to the school I was supposed to visit, the principal had gone home.”

He didn’t want to get behind schedule so he asked the school secretary for the address of the principal and then went to his house to visit him.
