“One more thing,” Bonnie said, rubbing her hand up and down his arm. I was afraid he might blow his load right there on the spot. “I need these ready, by 5:00 Thursday. You can do that, right?” “Well, it’ll mean working all night tonight and tomorrow, and I might have to put off a couple of other jobs, but why not? For you, I will do it.” After kissing him on the cheek, she left it to me to handle the details.

I handed over a folder with the band’s logo. After he looked at it, Lenny said, “Pretty simple design. It doesn’t cost any extra if you want to add a line of copy beneath the logo.” After considering for a moment, I slid a piece of paper in front of me and picked up a pen from the counter before scratching out a few words.

“If you could print that in dark red right beneath the logo, I’d appreciate it.” When I handed him the AmEx card for the deposit, he asked if I was the band’s agent. “Nope, just a roadie.” “Boy, that’s a gig I’d love to have. How did you get it?” “Right place, at the right time, is all.” “What’s your hurry?”

Bonnie asked as I wove in and out of traffic. Not wanting to admit I was hoping to be invited to her room, I said, “I’m starving, and it’s my turn to pick the pizza toppings.” In the early days of Coven, there wasn’t much money for things like restaurant meals. We ate a lot of fast food and pizza.

Which was fine by me. At twenty-one, I wasn’t in any rush to jump into a relationship. Besides, Coven’s founder was not the only member of the band I was regularly banging. Life on tour has its downsides. In between gigs, boredom can set in. Paige was the first to show up at my door, looking for a diversion. In the subsequent weeks, I had been happy to discover, the pink-haired bass player got bored a lot.

Chloe, like so many great drummers before her, had an addiction problem. Whenever she felt stressed, she would drink to excess. To save her career, she had recently replaced booze with sex.
