I don’t want to shoot you but I will.’ Ella could hear Eugene’s breathing over the distant thump of machinery on the factory floor. She could see the tendons in his neck standing out like cables, the sweat beading on his forehead, the way his whole body shuddered from the effort of just staying upright. ‘Put down the weapon, Eugene.

Last warning.’ He looked at the pry bar in his hand. Looked at it like he’d forgotten it was there. Then he looked at Ella. At the gun pointed at his chest. At the badge on her belt. And to Ella’s amazement, he dropped the crowbar to the ground.

It rang against the concrete like a bell going off. He raised his hands above his head. The tremors made them wave like flags in a breeze. ‘Fine,’ he said. ‘I did it. I killed Zane Lowry. And if I could, I’d do it again.’ OceanofPDF.com Ella had escorted Eugene Whittle out of his workplace, and two officers had then driven him back to the precinct.

Despite the fact Eugene might have been a serial killer, she’d foregone the handcuffs and kept any humiliation rituals to a minimum. This man already had enough problems, and he was about to get a lot more. Outside the interrogation room, Jim Strickland nudged Ella and said, ‘See, this is why I called you in. Who’s this creep?’ ‘Eugene Whittle. He was a suspect in the killing of a schoolteacher in 2003. Jasmine Hill High School.’ ‘Ah, yeah, Jasmine Hill. That was Scott County’s problem.

We never touched it. Way before your time.’ ‘Yeah. And now he’s suspect in this case too.’ Jim regarded Eugene through the glass. ‘You sure? He doesn’t look like much to me. You saying that guy strangled two people?’ Ella had been turning over the details since she landed eyes on Eugene. The man was slight with a clear degenerative disease, but he was stocky and presumably possessed old man strength. To effectively strangle someone, it either took great strength or a long time.

Surely, Eugene Whittle could manage one. Adrenaline did strange things to the body. Rage even more so. ‘I’m about to find out. He confessed to killing Zane Lowry already.’ ‘What? You’re kidding?’ ‘Yup. When I pulled my gun, he said I did it, I killed Zane Lowry.’ ‘Those exact words?’ ‘Those exact words,’ Ella said. ‘I know. I was surprised as anyone.’ ‘You get it on tape?’ Ella watched Eugene Whittle through the one-way window. There wasn’t a nervous bone in his body.

Other than the slight twitches, Eugene’s body language suggested confidence, which was very odd because even the most self-assured killers second-guessed themselves once they were in the interrogation room. ‘Nope, but something tells me he’s about to tell the same thing again. Have the murders made the news?’

He was ninety-nine percent personality, one percent competence. Which was why, at the ripe age of 35, he’d stumbled into one of the career paths that didn’t require much in the way of skill at all. He pushed the button to begin the recording. ‘Hey everyone, my name’s Zane and welcome to another episode of True Crime On My Mom’s Dime, and as you can probably see, this week I’m not coming live from my mom’s spare room.
