OceanofPDF.com OceanofPDF.com Chapter 5 Gray The walk to the nearby café is quiet and slightly awkward. Zeus trots eagerly between us, his tail wagging enthusiastically. It seems his daring escape earlier wasn’t enough excitement for the pooch. I steal glances at the stunning redhead beside me when I can, and when our gazes meet on occasion, my heart pounds in my chest. I might be making a huge mistake in inviting her out for coffee, but after I regretted her slipping away earlier so much, I just couldn’t help myself.

I know women can’t be trusted, but this one has already gotten under my skin. I just hope this spontaneous little date doesn’t end with me regretting it all. We settle down at an outside table of the café with two cups of coffee and Zeus patiently laying beneath my seat. Every so often, as if to remind me that he’s there, he gives my sneaker a little nip to remind me to be nice to his best friend. Piper seems stunned by how the pup has taken to me, and though I’d considered myself a cat person up until this point, even I have to admit the dog is endearing.

Something about his cartoonish, larger than life features on his itty-bitty little body is bloody adorable. Plus, how can you not love a dog named Zeus? “So…” she says, dipping her spoon in her mug and giving it a little swirl. When she looks at me, I can’t tell if she’s blushing or if she’s just warming up with the morning sunlight.

Either way, she’s beautiful. I don’t want to blink and miss even a second of her. “So, you said you wanted to interview Coach, right?” I ask. She nods, brightening slightly. “Yes, I work for the local paper. I just started recently so I’m trying to build a name for myself. I was hoping for an interview with someone on your team would give me a nice boost, especially with how well you lot are performing in the National Cup matches.”

Though Piper had been acting a little shy, that seems to melt away as she starts talking about her job. But, just as quickly as she became more buoyant and happy, she deflates again. “But I reckon I’ve lost my chance,” she sighs. “My deadline is in two days and I don’t think your coach will have a spare second.” I stroke my chin, a faint smirk dancing on my face. “Then how about you interview me, eh? You just need someone on the team, right?”

Coach’s whistle blows sharply, piercing through the sound of the other rugby players grunting and wheezing. We’ve been dashing back and forth across the field, weaving between one another as we pass the rugby ball between us, for hours straight. Our training was supposed to end earlier this afternoon, but now evening is swiftly falling. A cool wind blows as stars just barely begin to sparkle. This practice had been an especially intense one.

With the final round of the National Cup looming, we all want to be in peak condition for the big game. Finally, Coach’s whistle blows one last time, signaling the end to the drill. “I reckon you’re bloody trying to kill me, Coach!” wails Ryder as he collapses dramatically against the soft earth.

Jax breathlessly chuckles from where he stands. His broad body is hunched, his hands on his knees as he gulps in shallow breaths of air like a man in the desert might gulp down water. “I’m just trying to keep you lot in shape!” says the coach before he checks his watch with a wince. “Alright. I’ve got a conference call with the union that I’m about to miss.

You blokes get some shut eye. See you bright and early!” “Thanks, Coach!” calls Kai as the burly coach of the Auckland team turns and marches across the field towards an office tucked away near the stands. “Suck up,” Ryder mutters with a roll of his eyes.

Kai just smirks back at his best friend. A rough hand claps at my shoulder as a chiseled, Samoan player ambles past me. Though my strong legs feel like jelly, Manu looks perfectly content. It’s like he’s barely even broken a sweat. “How ya going, newbie?” Ryder calls over to me from where he’s still sprawled in the grass. “All good?” A short laugh escapes my throat. “I’ve been with the team for almost two years, bro. I don’t reckon I’m a newbie anymore.”

Ryder just laughs. He slowly pushes himself back up to his feet and stretches back and forth.
