There’s no point denying what’s happening. My cock strains against my pajama pants, the evidence of my arousal impossible to hide. The video still plays behind him, the moans of the men on screen mixing with our ragged breathing. I’m trapped between Lucian and the truth I’ve kept buried for years. The truth that’s now throbbing between my legs.

“Fine,” I say, my voice steadier than I expect. “You want me to admit it? I’m curious. So what?” Lucian’s eyes narrow, searching my face for signs of deception. He doesn’t move back, keeping me pinned. “Curious?” He repeats the word like he’s tasting it and finding it lacking. “That’s what you’re going with?” I meet his gaze. “Yes. Curious. I watch porn. Sometimes it’s gay porn.” I gesture toward the laptop. “It doesn’t mean what you think it means.” “And what do I think it means?”

“You think it means I’ve been secretly pining for you or something equally dramatic.” I roll my eyes. “It’s just lust, Lucian. A physical reaction. You’re a warm body that showed up on my doorstep. Don’t make it into something it’s not.” The hardening around his eyes is almost imperceptible, but I catch it. A flash of something like hurt before his mask slips back into place. I’ve caught him off guard with my bluntness, knocked him off balance for once. Good. “Just lust,” he repeats, his smile turning sharp.

“Nothing else?” “Nothing else.” His cockiness returns full force, but there’s an edge to it now. “So I could be anyone, and you’d still be hard right now?” “Pretty much.” Lucian shifts his weight, and I expect him to back off now that I’ve taken the wind out of his sails. Instead, his hand moves between us, palm pressing down firmly against the bulge in my pants.

I’ve scrubbed my skin raw, but after a twelve- hour shift in the ER, the stench of disinfectant still haunts my nostrils, mixing with the pasta sauce simmering on my stove. Friday nights used to mean something different. Now they’re just the end of a sixty-hour workweek and the beginning of two days where I’m not elbow-deep in other people’s emergencies.

I walk to the kitchen, breathing in garlic and tomato. My sauce has thickened nicely. I stir it once, turn the heat down to low, and pour myself a generous glass of cabernet. The first sip slides warm down my throat. The clock on the microwave reads 10:47 PM. It’s too late for company, too early for sleep, and the rain hammering against my windows makes the house feel even more isolated than usual. Perfect conditions for bad decisions. I carry my wine to the living room, set it on the coffee table, and retrieve my laptop.

The couch cushions welcome me as I settle in, propping my feet up on the ottoman. I open the computer and go straight to my browser, clicking the bookmarks tab. My cursor hovers over the folder labeled “Research.” I stare at it and feel the same tightness in my chest I always do when I’m about to click it. It’s been years, but I still can’t shake this particular habit.

“Fuck it,” I mutter, and open the folder. The video sits in my bookmarks exactly where I left it last week. And the week before that. I don’t know why I bother hiding it in a folder. I live alone. Nobody’s checking my browser history. The only person I’m hiding it from is myself, pretending each time is the last time. I stand up abruptly and walk to the windows, tugging the blinds closed with more force than necessary. The rain is coming down in sheets, distorting the streetlights into hazy orbs.

Not a soul is crazy enough to be out in this weather. I’m completely alone.
