I cursed. It was the same guild crest Leo and his comrades wore. “You’ve heard of them?” Chase asked. “Yes.” “I’ll tell you what. If your information is good, I’ll consider it payment for my call.” A tricky situation. If I told Chase, I wouldn’t have any cards left. I looked at Lucan, and he shrugged. My call. In for a penny. “The guild is based about half a day northwest of GreenRiver. We believe, but have no proof yet, that the current Dragon Head, Jasper Dracos, is the silent owner.

He doesn’t run the day-to-day operation and put someone else in the position of guildmaster.” I bit my lip. “All the ones we came across were from the lower castes of the Dracos Tribe, and even the ones wearing glass pendants gave us a run for our money.” The other end of the line was silent for a moment, and then Chase spoke again. “We’re square,” he said, then hung up. “I guess this means I really pissed Jasper off,” Lucan said, leaning over my shoulder.

He sounded a little too cavalier for my liking. I turned around, placing a hand on his chest. “We can’t assume Jasper is the only client of that guild. He’s smart and wouldn’t do anything that could trace back to him. Especially not with the trial this close.” “Until Leo tells.” The drake’s oath had covered not attacking a set list of people. I’d wanted to add a caveat to make him keep silent, but Lucan had rightly reminded me that Jasper’s tendrils ran deep in the man’s mind.

To have him swear such an oath would be a death sentence. I was confident that by now, Jasper was aware we knew about his little pet guild. No matter what happened, I would protect Lucan. Meeting his eyes, I gave him a cheeky smile. “On the bright side, it means you’re going to be stuck with me for the foreseeable future.” Lucan’s eyes went dragon bright. “Exactly how close are we talking?” OceanofPDF.com Chapter 17 right and early the next day, we began sorting out what to do with our witnesses.

With the news of a bounty on Lucan’s head, we both feared that those who’d chosen to stand with us would become targets. “Should we ask the guild to hide them?” I asked as we got dressed. Lucan thought about it for a moment. “Last resort. I don’t want it to seem like Curtis is playing favorites, and we can’t afford to hire the Lifers or Jacks necessary to keep all of them safe.”

He was right.

I asked. Thirteen core members of Lucan’s rebellion sat around a large, circular table carved with ornate designs of mythical creatures. Observing the pattern, I couldn’t help but remember my mother. She’d loved Arthurian lore, and this table would have sparked her imagination.
