With Christ as their foundation, their message has never wavered: no one walks this journey alone. Rooted firmly in the gospel, The Whisnants have distinguished themselves not through spectacle or trends, but through sincerity. Their ministry flows naturally from home to church to marketplace, reflecting a faith that is lived long before it is sung. Over the years, they have traveled across the globe, earned numerous awards and nominations including a recent Dove Award nomination and touched countless lives.

Yet, as Susan Whisnant often reminds friends and followers on social media, “It is good to be home.” Jeff, Susan, Aaron, Austin, and Ethan are five individuals united by calling, faith, and family. They continue to carry a message best summed up by one of their classic songs: Go Tell One.

The Whisnants’ story began in 1970 in North Carolina, when a young Jeff Whisnant sang alongside his parents and brother. What started as simple obedience quickly grew into a ministry that would plant seeds far beyond what they could see at the time. Traveling regionally, they sang wherever doors opened, never knowing how far- reaching those early steps of faith would become. Several years later, a turning point arrived in the form of a young woman named Susan.

The two met at a gospel concert, an origin story that feels fitting for a couple whose lives would become inseparable from the music they loved. As their relationship grew, Susan began traveling with the family and eventually joined the group, becoming part of the original Whisnants lineup. They continued in that formation until 1988, the year Jeff and Susan were married.

Life, as they would soon learn, has a way of bringing big changes all at once. Following their marriage, the group received a record deal with Sunlight Records (now Crossroads).

If I were to try and narrow down one event that is the most unique and perhaps the most meaningful, I would have to point to the Southern Gospel Music Association’s Hall of Fame Induction and Benefit Concert at the National Quartet Convention. For a few hours on a Tuesday afternoon, both artists and fans witness the history of Gospel Music being honored and preserved.

I have lost count of how many inductions I have been too, but every time I sit in the audience and watch the people who are the foundation of this industry be recognized for their work in Gospel Music, I am reminded of how important this one event is. Not because of a medallion or plaque, but the tears, joy, laughter and stories of a lifetime given to ministry and music.

There is something so special about an artist standing up and recognizing their peers, or, a family member seeing the love of thousands poured on their father, mother, son or daughter in an effort to say, “well done.” Every year, the SGMA does a phenomenal job in making sure that these things happen. But they have never claimed to do it alone. Again and again, they have emphasized that none of this would be possible without the support of those who love Gospel music.

And that’s people like you and me. How do we get involved in something so momentous? By simply becoming a member of the Southern Gospel Music Association. A membership only costs $20 a year, and when you become a member, you are not only helping preserve the history of Gospel music, you also let your voice be heard by selecting the next class of inductees. The nomination process for the Class of 2026 opens today, March 1st.

If you’re already a member of the SGMA, please log on and cast your vote. If you are not and would like to be a part, you can become a member today and vote in the next round. Anyone can become a member of the SGMA. Let’s come together and honor the legacy of those who have given their lives to the ministry of the gospel through song. Who will you honor in the Class of 2026? A Moment with Maria By Maria Kramer Wolfe THE SPARROW Growing up, I was your typical firstborn daughter.

I was creative, innovative, and when it came to planning, two steps ahead of everyone. My younger brother is autistic, and the experience as his sister caused me to be overly protective and a bit hyper vigilant. A theme of my personality has been “control”. I absolutely love to have control over circumstances.
