Standing at the stove as he puts the kettle on, he suddenly turns his head to look over his shoulder at me. A look that could make weaker men cower is holding me hostage, but I won’t bend. Not for this. I had one cheating wife in my life, so I know how this game is played, unfortunately. Take the offense in order to avoid playing defense.

Been there, done that. Out of curiosity, I just want to know how far he’ll take this before owning up to his rekindled feelings for his teenage lost love. “The fact that you’re bringing up the ‘guilt’ topic shows that you are, indeed, guilty of something. So just fucking spit it out, Larson and we’ll get past this apparent hurdle.”

Troy turns back to the cabinets and takes out two cups. His, with an exact replica of Muffy that I found at the flea market and mine with an overly fatigued character sitting at his writing machine and drinking coffee. The words “Writer at Work” describing the scene all too well.

I watch him rummage through the cupboard for two tea packets before settling on Chamomile for him and Honey for me. It doesn’t escape my notice that he’s chosen two “relaxing” flavors. Troy is trying to soothe my nerves, but I can guarantee that it will take more than fucking tea to bring my blood pressure down. The whole of China could not make enough tea to calm my ass down.

“I have nothing to confess, Troy. Do you?” I want to see where this goes. I want him to open up to me without making me pull the worms from his fucking nose. “Oh yeah? Are you sure about that? Because I beg to differ,” he finishes as he turns around and leans against the counter, waiting for the kettle to whistle. To my own annoyance, my eyes are drawn to the cords of lean muscles that decorate his arms with each of his movements, especially when he crosses them over his chest.

We’re at a stalemate, here. That much is obvious. “Oh, pray tell, Troy. What exactly are you getting at? Are you accusing me of something? Cheating, maybe?” That should ring a bell.

It was supposed to be a stand-alone about two arrogant alpha men who were stubborn right down to their DNA. I didn’t realize that their stubbornness would follow us still, a year later. Yet, here we are with Hard Edit. Troy and Larson are not your typical couple. If you’re looking for rainbows and unicorns, I’m afraid they high- tailed it out and fast. What you will get are two flawed yet sincere men who are well aware of their misgivings…they just choose to ignore them.

I hope you enjoy reading about them as much as I enjoyed writing. First off, I’d like to thank Andrea Smith a thousand times over for trusting me enough to write with me.
