They were still there, veiny and impressive, at least for the duration of an eye blink. The tattoo too, at the very bottom of her lower abdomen – a bright red devil fashioned in the style of a Japanese kabuki mask. It was the feature she loathed most on her whole body. Not that tattoo, but the one it was covering. Sometimes, in certain lights, she swore she could still see the words beneath.

* Sneed didn’t answer Dahlia’s text. She stood out the front of her house, pondering what that could mean, when she heard Fowler coming, her Ford Escort gliding to a stop alongside Dahlia. Dahlia eased into the car and Fowler drove off. Her car did sound like a beast, capable of tearing the road to pieces, yet she drove like a learner – one who wanted to pass their test, but also had to get to a hospital as quickly as possible.

‘Your boss get in touch with you?’ ‘Texted me. Didn’t say much.’ ‘You seen his presser yet?’ ‘I haven’t.’ ‘He didn’t say anything particularly new,’ Fowler said. ‘Bloke looks like he hasn’t had a decent sleep in his whole life. You know why he texted?’ Dahlia shook her head. ‘I reckon I do. Before I swung past yours, I went for a little drive through town. Tried finding a coffee shop that was open – there wasn’t a single one.

So I went to a servo, spoke to the bloke working there. He reckons he had a bunch of fireys come through in the wee hours of the morning. Any guesses where they’d been?’ Dahlia was too muddled, bogged down with thinking about her confrontation with Marcus, what Scarlet had said about Callum. And Jude. Always Jude. ‘No idea.’ ‘Hunter Rochford’s factory, facility, whatever it’s called – sounds like someone torched it.’ Dahlia’s thoughts instantly stilled. ‘You might want to give your boss a call,’ Fowler said. OceanofPDF.com Sneed answered quickly, sounding tired, distracted, but most of all pissed off.

Dahlia put him on speaker. ‘Head straight to Hunter Rochford’s plastic treatment facility,’ Sneed said. ‘Word is the place has been reduced to rubble.’ ‘Thought that might be the case,’ Fowler said. ‘You already knew?’ Sneed asked. ‘Guy at the servo told me.’ ‘Shouldn’t be surprised. Most of the town must know, there were explosions, at least a couple. They woke me up, and I’m a heavy sleeper.’ They didn’t answer. He didn’t seem to notice. ‘Sounded bad from what I’ve heard thus far, not that I’ve heard much beyond preliminary reports.

A town engulfed in flames. The dying coastal town of Broughlet is being torn apart by wildfires, and the locals suspect arson. A cult devoted to fire. Amid the choking black smog, Constable Dahlia Turner discovers a horrifying crime – her best friends have been murdered and their son abducted.

Finding him will mean confronting the violent past she’s spent years trying to outrun. But as danger closes in around her, can Dahlia uncover the truth before it burns away forever? Never give up. OceanofPDF.com CHAPTER ONE Dahlia glanced up from her phone and realised she was about to veer off the road, straight into a field of fire. Visibility had been reduced to smudges among the smoke and the atmosphere had become sludge as the fires raced across Broughlet’s outskirts. An insistent voice begged her to turn back. Forget the list of properties to check out. People had been told to evacuate a full day prior; if they wanted to stay and take on the colossal beast of fire careening towards them – that was their choice.

Dahlia slowed the patrol car, setting her phone down on the vacant seat next to her, after one final, distrusting look at the screen. Neither Callum nor Xavier had responded to her texts. The panic spreading inside her as easily as the fires through the bushland outside wasn’t so consuming she couldn’t appreciate the irony of her situation. A cop texting while driving – in a cop car. Not that there was anyone around to report her.

After her colleague, Mia, had turned off in the opposite direction with her own list of properties to check on, the only person Dahlia had encountered was Jasper Rochford. That exchange had been regrettable, but at least he was the only other person she’d come across. Since then, since him, she hadn’t seen another soul. The only property still left to check out belonged to Callum and his husband, Xavier Vinson – and their son, Jude. Her best friends and her godson. Who weren’t responding to her texts.
