Each has a hand raised as a moustache, the other arm raised in salute. The radio broadcast gets louder and merges with their salutes. Heil les Deux Magots! Heil Café de Flore! Heil James Joyce! On the 10th of May 1940, Winston Churchill is appointed Prime Minister of Great Britain. On the same day, as a token of their congratulations, Germany invades northeastern France, sweeping past the Maginot Line and through the Ardennes Forest to also take Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. On the 14th of June 1940, our beautiful Paris falls to the nazis. Collaboration becomes a dirty word.

France is now under occupation by Germany and its ally Italy. On the 28th of June 1940, German squadrons bomb the harbours of the tiny islands of Guernsey and Jersey in the English Channel. Forty-three islanders are killed. On the 30th of June 1940, Guernsey and Jersey surrender to the German army. Occupation is declared. In September 1940, relentless bombing begins on London and other cities in Britain in what will become known as the Blitz. In Jersey today it is below seasonal but sunny.

Ten years have passed since we last saw our protagonists. They are no longer quite so young but just as, ahem, queer as ever … SUZANNE and CLAUDE have left the freedom of Paris behind, and they are now both dressed in 1940s skirts, sweaters, and headscarves. It was Suzanne’s idea to go to Jersey.
