“Your power is ash compared to what we have become.” “Maybe,” Patricia admitted, “but I’m not fighting alone.” The massive Phase Walker wasn’t giving up on reaching us. It started carving the hole wider with systematic precision that was frankly insulting. I reached deeper into my magic than was probably wise. I had to draw power from the network. The Phase Walkers existed partially in multiple dimensions simultaneously. If I could sever the dimensional anchors that kept it stable… Instead of attacking the creature’s body, I targeted the dimensional boundaries that held it together.

My spell wrapped around those invisible connection points and began to squeeze like a boa constrictor with commitment issues. The creature’s scream changed pitch, becoming higher and more desperate. Through the widening hole, I could see its leather skin start to ripple violently. “Whatever you’re doing, keep doing it!” Zane yelled, sending another wave of blue flames upward to keep the thing distracted. I remained at the fork with Astra, Riley, and Mom while Mimi was with Zane reloading her shotgun.

Right as I poured more effort into the dimensional boundaries, the Devourer’s avatar decided to take a more direct approach. It looked like it was preparing to drop down into our escape route. That was when Mimi proved why she was the most dangerous member of our family. Instead of shooting at the avatar directly, she aimed through the hole at the museum’s ornate chandelier. The massive fixture came crashing down like a crystal meteor. Bronze arms and crystal decorations slammed into the avatar’s back.

The creature stumbled, off-balance, directly into Patricia’s next spell. Silver light wrapped around the avatar like chains made of starlight. “This won’t hold it for long!” Patricia warned as we continued backing down the tunnel. “It doesn’t need to,” I replied, feeling the Phase Walker’s dimensional anchors finally give way under the pressure. The Phase Walker’s body collapsed with a crash that shook dust from the tunnel ceiling. The sound echoed through the museum above like applause from hell.

You’re left scrambling in the chaos, hands bloodied from gathering the sharp edges, wondering how you’ll ever make sense of it all. But then, in some quiet moment between the wreckage and the rebuilding, you catch yourself laughing at something small and unexpected. And you realize: maybe joy isn’t found in the life you planned, but in the beautiful, messy work of learning to live the one you’ve been given.”

~ Eliza Grey OceanofPDF.com T CHAPTER 1 he blaring of an alarm jolted me awake. Gasping, I grabbed my cell and saw it was an emergency alert, and it was 3:47 AM. My heart raced a million miles a minute. Being woken like that was as bad as a freight train crashing through my bedroom window. The Coast Guard was reporting unusual weather patterns in the Atlantic. The ferry service was suspended due to mechanical difficulties.

The Council’s sensors indicated the crisis was magical in origin. Something big and undoubtedly terrible was heading our way. Dammit. I couldn’t even get three full days of semi-normalcy before the universe decided to take a giant steaming dump on my life again. I rolled out of bed with a groan that would’ve made a zombie proud and started throwing on clothes. My brain helpfully replayed the last few days while I wrestled with a sports bra that had apparently decided to become my mortal enemy.

Three days. That’s how long we’d gotten to pretend everything was hunky-dory after preventing dimensional collapse, rebalancing an ancient magical network.
