The City of Light was gradually slipping into an almost mystical silence. The soft glow of the full moon and the scattered streetlamps bathed the scene in a dreamlike quality. The Seine, calm and serene, mirrored the sparkling stars dusting the night sky. A few scattered pedestrians wandered the esplanade, each feeling as though they had the Eiffel Tower entirely to themselves. Their footsteps echoed softly against the cobblestones, breaking the nocturnal silence with a discreet, steady rhythm.

Some couples walked hand in hand; others wandered alone, lost in thought, while a few remaining street vendors quietly argued over the last lingering tourists, desperate to clear out the day’s stock. A light breeze brushed through the trees lining the esplanade, rustling the leaves softly. The air was still thick with lingering daytime heat, and the fragrance of the surrounding gardens floated through the night, creating an enchanting atmosphere. The Eiffel Tower itself stood like a deity of iron—slender, triumphant, and proudly anchored on its four massive pillars.

Its silhouette, both massive and deeply graceful, seemed to reach up and touch the stars. Its powerful beacon rotated at the summit, cutting through the low clouds, keeping a reassuring, sweeping watch over the city. At this late hour, the tower’s famous sparkling light show was already a memory. It no longer shimmered with its characteristic golden and silver elegance. Yet, the passersby still stopped to admire it, projecting the memory of the lights onto the dark iron.

They paused to take photos, capturing the profound peace of a Paris night—for some, the only one they would ever experience. The Seine, meanwhile, was a perfect mirror of calm and serenity. A few riverboats drifted silently across the water, their muted lights barely illuminating the surface. The surrounding city would soon be entirely asleep within this magical setting. As it did every night, the esplanade and the river formed a breathtaking tableau, full of mystery and beauty, revealing their secret splendor only to those who took the time to look.

Like a shadow, Sara slipped carefully through the oppressive darkness blanketing the base of the tower. The distant light of the full moon reflected faintly off the rain-slicked metal of the North Pillar. She was agonizingly close to her objective: to simply reach out and press her hand against the metal right here. The gesture was so bafflingly simple it felt ridiculous.

How had she let herself get dragged into this absolute fever dream? Yet her heart was hammering against her ribs, violently pumping blood up the veins in her neck and straight to her brain.

OceanofPDF.com THE PLUMBER Justine & Lydia’s Apartment “Mom, the plumber is here!” That Saturday morning, Justine was still wrestling with the last dregs of sleep. For weeks now, her nights had been a battlefield, her mind held captive by a vice of devouring nightmares. Fatigue draped over her like a lead blanket, pinning her to the threshold between dream and reality. Lydia, her thirteen-year-old daughter, burst into the gloom of the master bedroom.
